After Henrietta Wood was kidnapped and sold into slavery, she sued the man who kidnapped her and won $2500. Wood was born into slavery in Kentucky but was granted her freedom in Cincinnati in 1848. Five years later, she was kidnapped by the defendant and sold to a plantation in Texas. When Ward regained her freedom after the Civil War, she returned to her home in Cincinnati and began the litigation process against the defendant a year after, in 1870. The litigation took eight years before the case finally went to trial. In a surprising verdict, the all-white jury sided with Wood, who was then in her 60s and was unsure if she would ever see justice. She died in 1912, and her story was almost forgotten by history had it not been for her son's efforts to memorialize the events.

Wilma Rudolph built one of the most successful track and field careers in African American Women's history, winning three gold medals at the 1960 summer Olympics and one bronze medal at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne. She was the Associated Press's Female Athlete of the Year in 1961 and was inducted into the Olympic Hall of Fame. Rudolph overcame extreme adversity, as she survived several bouts of Polio and Scarlet Fever throughout her childhood and was forced to wear a leg brace due to her illnesses. Her doctor informed her that she would never walk again, yet she persevered and became one of the fastest women alive. Rudolph was also keenly aware of Black Americans' injustices and refused to attend her homecoming parade if it was not integrated.
