The global community is observing the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition.

Today, we join the global community in observing the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition.

We remember the millions of Africans who were forcibly displaced, trafficked, and enslaved through the transatlantic slave trade, while honoring their humanity, courage, resistance, resilience, and enduring legacy throughout the Caribbean, the Americas, and across the world.

August 23 carries profound historical significance. On the night of August 22–23, 1791, enslaved people in Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti 🇭🇹) rose against slavery and colonial oppression, igniting a pivotal chapter of the Haitian Revolution. Their resistance inspired UNESCO’s designation of August 23 as a day to remember the tragedy of the slave trade and honor the struggle for freedom.

May we continue to preserve this history, remember those whose stories and names were lost, honor those who resisted, and carry their legacy forward in the pursuit of dignity, equality, freedom, and justice.
