Donating blood is a powerful way to support people living with sickle cell disease, which affects over 100,000 Americans—primarily those of African descent. This inherited disorder causes red blood cells to harden into crescent shapes, blocking blood flow and leading to severe pain, organ damage, and even strokes. For many patients, blood transfusions are life-saving.
A diverse blood supply is essential. Since blood types and antigens are often shared within racial and ethnic groups, patients with sickle cell disease are most likely to find the best match from donors of similar backgrounds. In fact, 1 in 3 Black donors is a match for a patient with sickle cell disease. Yet, while Black Americans represent 13% of the U.S. population, they make up less than 3% of donors. This disparity makes it harder to provide the closely matched blood that prevents complications from frequent transfusions. Increasing the number of Black donors can change that.
The theme for the drive is "Stronger Together". In honor of coming together for our conference, we want our NPHC members to come together and save lives. Let's show our community and the patients in need of blood just how much we care and what we can do.
If you can’t join us at the National Leadership Conference in Houston (Oct 30–Nov 2, 2025), you can still make a lifesaving impact by donating in your own community. Every donation brings hope to families in need.
