Val's Helping Hands

Val's Helping Hands Organization that serves low-income members of the Houston metro area that require DME/AE for ADLs.

Val's Helping Hands is an organization that serves low-income members of the Houston metro area that require durable medical equipment/adaptive equipment (DME/AE) to safely perform daily activities by conducting a home safety assessment for the client and then providing them with the proper DME/AE. Val's Helping Hands allows volunteer therapists to conduct home safety assessments, assemble the equ

ipment, and place it in the proper place in the home. When clients require additional services to provide maximum safety within the home that is not provided by the organization, Val's Helping Hands provides resources to the clients so that the repairs can be made.

We have had a very productive morning! We followed up with the client from the previous story posted with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis, this morning. We provided him a bedside commode and he is now able to utilize the restroom independently. We did hit a small bump in the road, as the over-the-tub shower bench legs were not long enough for his tub. So, we will be getting some leg extenders so we can visit him again and hopefully be able to provide him with the ability to bathe himself independently. After visiting with the client, we went to pick up even more donations! Again, we are so thankful and grateful for the continued support we have received. We could not do this without our donors!

Good morning, everyone! We have received so many donations the past 2 weeks of equipment that we are currently in need of more storage! We would like to purchase a small storage building or if we could get one donated, that would be even better! You can make monetary donations through cash app using the cash tag $Chrissy07100401

Last week we got a call about a potential client in need. This client has secondary progressive multiple sclerosis and from what we heard about the client, we knew he needed our help. Upon entering the home, we could see the issues described to us. First, the client was unable to safely transfer to and from the shower as the shower bench was on the opposite wall and was a stand alone shower. However, the client did have a bathtub that could be easily accessed with his wheelchair. So in the coming days, we will be providing the client with an over-the-tub shower bench that he can safely transfer to with supervision. Secondly, the client was unable to make it to the restroom in time due to barriers such as his ability to quickly transfer to his chair to make it to the bathroom, and the limited bathroom door space. For that, we will be providing him with a bedside commode so that the client can quickly transfer from his chair or out of bed and safely. We also noticed that the way the client was transferring in and out of his chair was unsafe, so we educated him on how to properly position his chair and transfer in the safest way possible. Lastly, the client mentioned that the footrests on his wheelchair would sometimes cut his feet and legs. So, today, we provided him with a simple solution by adding a pair of socks to each footrest, to cover the sharp areas.

Good afternoon everyone! I have some good news and bad news. The good news is that we as a nonprofit are really taking off and have had a ton of potential clients reach out to us. However, what comes with that is the need for more equipment! We are running low on supplies and so we are reaching out to our community to ask for help. If anyone has a piece of adaptive equipment (wheelchair, walker, reacher, shower chair, etc) that is in good working condition that they would like to donate to a good cause, please reach out to us. We would be so grateful. We rely on donations to keep our program running, and would like to serve as many clients as possible.

Thank you so much in advance,
