Strengthening Young Environmental Champions in Sierra Leone!

Today, the BLP Sierra Leone (BLPSL) team visited Yelisanda Community Secondary School in Gbanti Chiefdom, Bombali District, to hold a school assembly and engage with classrooms as part of our flagship program, “Our Environment, Our Future.” Students actively participated as we discussed environmental stewardship, waste management, and the importance of reforestation. We also held a productive reassessment session with the school’s Environmental Club to review progress, celebrate achievements, and align on the program's next steps.

These moments of interaction continue to inspire and equip young people with the knowledge and confidence to become true environmental champions. Our program now reaches 13,300+ students across 15 schools in Sierra Leone (and 24 in Cameroon), and 2,900+ saplings have been planted. We remain committed to nurturing a generation that protects and restores our environment.

Another Story, Same Challenge: Ms. Ndibosi’s Plea 🌟

Ms. Ndibosi graduated in April 2025 from our Girls Shall Rise program at the BLP Empowerment Center in Bamenda. She completed her tailoring training with great hope and skill.

Like many of our graduates, she lacked the capital to start her own shop. She had to take a low-paying survival job at MTN. Today, she is humbly pleading for support to finally open her own tailoring business.

This is the real gap in our Theory of Change: We give them the skills, but many still need that final push with business startup kits to achieve true independence.
Mission: Empowering vulnerable youth to rebuild resilient, sustainable communities.

We need partners to help graduates like Happiness and Ndibosi with sewing machines and basic startup equipment. If you can support even one young woman to move from survival to ownership, please reach out or donate. Link in comments.

Land Allocated for BLP VSLA Smart Agriculture Demonstration Centres in Rosint and Manor Comminities in Sierra Leone.

This moment represents the powerful evolution of our work in Sierra Leone:
It began with our pioneer Mend the Gap Schooling Program for Ebola (EVD) Orphans and Survivors (MDG) in 2016.

To ensure mothers and caregivers could continue supporting their children after BLP’s direct involvement ended, we established the BLP Mothers’ Club. From there, we introduced Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLA) as a sustainable exit strategy focused on financial literacy. Today, these same VSLA women are stepping into smart agriculture, starting this May with groundnuts and cassava.

Why should our people go hungry when there is vast arable land? This demonstration centre will empower VSLA groups with practical skills in sustainable farming while generating income and improving food security.

We are grateful to the Chief and the entire Rosint and Manor communities for their trust and commitment.

Meet Happiness, a proud graduate of our Girls Shall Rise program at the BLP Empowerment Center in Bamenda (April 2025 cohort). She successfully completed tailoring training, full of hope and skills.

However, like many of our graduates, she lacked startup capital. Instead of opening her own tailoring shop, she had to take a low-paying survival job at MTN. Her dream is still alive, and she is now humbly requesting BLP's support to acquire basic equipment to start her own business.

This is exactly why our Theory of Change matters: we equip vulnerable young women with skills, but many still need that critical last push with business startup kits to move from survival to true independence.

We cannot do this alone. We need partners who can support our graduates with startup kits (sewing machines, accessories, small capital, etc.).

Let’s complete the journey together. Every kit helps turn training into real economic freedom.

Sumara Masanray is a BSc Accounting and Finance student at Ernest Bai Koroma University. In her own words: “I have gained practical skills in computer training. I appreciate the way the facilitators taught us, it has increased my confidence using computers, and I believe this will help me both in my personal life and my academic career. I am very grateful for this one-month program that has impacted other young people and me so much.”

The first cohort of our Free One-Month Computer Training has successfully come to an end, and registration is now open for the second cohort!

This is the heart of BLP’s Theory of Change: When we equip vulnerable and aspiring youth in Northern Sierra Leone with foundational digital skills, we don’t just teach them how to use a computer; we build confidence, unlock academic success, and prepare them to become leaders who drive sustainable development in their communities.

Rosint Community Fully Commits Land for BLP VSLA Smart Agriculture Initiative🌱

Bright Light Projects Sierra Leone team, on a routine monitoring visit to Rosint Community in Tonkolili District, had a productive meeting with the community chief and VSLA members. In a strong display of trust and partnership, the Chief openly expressed appreciation for BLP’s long-standing relationship with the community and formally allocated land for the new VSLA Smart Agriculture initiative.

We also agreed on the terms for seed return after harvest, showing mutual accountability and sustainability. The VSLA women are now eagerly awaiting the arrival of seeds so implementation can start this April 2026. This milestone perfectly combines financial literacy with practical agriculture, empowering rural women to achieve greater food security and economic independence.

Christina’s Journey – Living Proof of BLP’s Theory of Change

In this video from 2021, meet Christina as she began her training in Welding and Metal Fabrication at the Opportunities Industrialization Centre (COIC) Buea under our Girls Shall Rise program. From 2021 to 2023, she mastered a traditionally male-dominated trade. After completing her program, she secured an internship at Alpha Marine Company in Limbe, and by 2025, she was fully employed, turning skills into stable income and dignity.

Christina’s story beautifully embodies BLP’s Theory of Change: Because conflict and crisis trap vulnerable youth in poverty and limited opportunities, we equip them with practical, marketable skills, agency, and real-world
experience so they can rebuild resilient, sustainable lives and communities.

BLP Vision: A West Africa where vulnerable youth lead vibrant, equitable communities, turning crisis into platforms of shared sustainability.

This is exactly why BLP is unique: we don’t just train; we transform. From classroom to workplace to economic independence, we walk with our beneficiaries every step of the way. Christina is not an exception; she is the standard we are building toward.

Proud Moment from Week 2 of our Free Computer Training in Makeni! 💻

Sharing this beautiful flyer designed by our participant Sia Farma after just two weeks in our Free One-Month Introductory Computer Training Program. From “I never imagined I could do this!” to confidently creating professional documents and designing flyers, this is the real impact of hands-on digital skills training.

In collaboration with Youth Actions for Sustainable Development Sierra Leone we are equipping young people, especially young women, girls, and persons with disabilities, with practical competencies in MS Word, Publisher, and more. Moments like this remind us why we are committed to bridging the digital divide and empowering youth in Northern Sierra Leone.

Commemorating International Day of Zero Waste: BLP Leads Clean-Up at Gratitude Islamic Secondary School!

On March 30, 2026, the BLP team, in collaboration with Gratitude Islamic Secondary School, successfully organized a school-wide clean-up campaign to mark the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Waste. Students actively participated in cleaning the school premises, sorting waste, and promoting responsible waste management practices. The activity served as a powerful reminder that environmental cleanliness is both an individual and collective global responsibility.

The campaign fostered teamwork, environmental consciousness, and a strong sense of ownership among the students. The school’s environmental teacher expressed deep appreciation for BLP’s continued support and highlighted the positive impact of such hands-on initiatives on students’ behavior and awareness.

We remain committed to turning awareness into action for a cleaner and healthier environment.
