Clean up beds of established perennials if you haven't done so. Trim away the old dead growth to spruce up the area. Save those trimmings for the compost pile or for garden-pathway materials. Organic matter is free natural fertilizer. And who doesn't love free stuff?!

The first day of spring is here! As the days grow longer and the soil warms, native grasses and wildflowers begin their seasonal resurgence.

🌿 Native Plants Wake Up - Deep rooted prairie grasses like Big Bluestem and Little Bluestem send up fresh shoots, while wildflowers start blooming. These plants do more than add color to the landscape - they support pollinators, stabilize the soil, and help filter water.

🦋 Pollinators Return - Bees, butterflies, and other pollinators reappear, searching for nectar from early bloomers. Monarch butterflies rely on native milkweed as they migrate north, and the prairie provides an essential stop along their journey.

🔥 Fire and Grazing Shape the Prairie - These grasslands evolved alongside fire and grazing. Many land stewards use prescribed burns in early spring to mimic these natural cycles and keep prairies thriving.

🦉 Wildlife is on the Move - Spring is nesting season for grassland birds and amphibians begin their evening chorus as seasonal wetlands (hopefully 🤞🏻) fill with rain.

Want to help prairies this season?
🌾 Plant native wildflowers and grasses to support pollinators.
🔥 Learn about prescribed fire and its role in prairie health.
🐦 Visit a prairie or restoration site and experience the land in bloom.
🤝 Support conservation efforts that protect and restore Texas’ native grasslands.
