Three days before Juneteenth, a book drops that every Black woman in medicine needs to read. 🩷🤎

Nicole Carr’s debut book releases June 16 — just ahead of Juneteenth — and it is exactly the book this moment needs.

“The Price of Exclusion” traces how the AMA’s deliberate exclusion of Black physicians, the Flexner Report’s closure of Black medical schools, and generations of structural racism created the health disparities Black communities are still living with today.
Only 5% of U.S. physicians are Black. By 2036, the U.S. won’t have enough physicians to care for its citizens.

This book names the system. Now it’s our job to fight it.

Meet Sage Campbell and she is about to be DR. CAMPBELL!! 👏🏾🎉🩷

Sage is an MS4 at the Fertitta Family College of Medicine at the University of Houston and she is graduating this May 2026!! 🌸 Four years of late nights, early mornings, board exams, clinical rotations, and everything in between and she made it through every single one. 👏🏾🤎

And if that was not enough, Sage has officially matched into Family Medicine at Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program!! 🩺✨

Family Medicine. The backbone of healthcare. The specialty that sees the whole patient, the whole family, the whole community. That is not just a match, that is a calling. And Sage answered it. 🌱

The test used to diagnose asthma in children was built by a slaveholder to justify slavery. And it’s been used on Black children for over 150 years.

A 2025 JAMA Network Open study found that race-neutral spirometry identifies 2–4× more Black children with asthma. In some groups, the old formula missed over HALF of Black children with asthma entirely.

Black children are 4× more likely to die from asthma than other U.S. children. This is not a coincidence.

Psoriasis on Black skin doesn’t look red. It looks gray. Purple. Dark brown. 🤎🩷

And because every image you’ll find online shows lighter skin, Black women are going years without a correct diagnosis. Some are waiting 3 years longer than white patients for answers.

Untreated psoriasis can turn into psoriatic arthritis — causing irreversible joint damage. But early treatment can prevent it.

The most dangerous time for Black mothers isn’t the delivery room.

It’s after. 🌿

More than 50% of pregnancy-related deaths happen postpartum. Black women die from postpartum cardiomyopathy at 6× the rate of white women.

Between 29–44% of Black women experience postpartum depressive symptoms but are treated at half the rate of white women.

The warning signs are real. The gaps in care are real.

And right now, the Medicaid funding that covers 60%+ of Black births is under threat from H.R. 1 budget cuts.
