Bayou Preservation Association

Bayou Preservation Association Our mission is to celebrate, protect and restore the natural richness of all our bayous and streams.

For over 55 years, we’ve been Houston's longest-running and most trusted environmental conservation nonprofit. At Bayou Preservation Association, our vision is a network of healthy bayous, streams and watersheds. Through a science-based approach to policies and actions, community collaboration, and a commitment to safe and clean water, we're working to transform our city into a region acknowledged

nationally for its high quality of life. Our Mission: Celebrate, Protect, Restore
Covering over 2,500 miles, Houston's bayous are not just beautiful but also provide essential flood protection and public health benefits. We embrace a collaborative approach, uniting community partners, policymakers, and local governments to enhance the health of our bayous and our Lower Galveston Bay watershed. Balancing Growth & Preservation
In a rapidly growing urban environment like Houston, addressing environmental issues is urgent. We advocate for nature-based solutions to harmonize growth and preservation while ensuring equitable access for all within the Lower Galveston Bay watershed. Through implementation of the Coastal Public Lands Management Act, the Galveston Bay Estuary Plan, and The City of Houston Climate Action Plan, we create programs that celebrate, protect, and restore the richness of our waterways. Promoting Resilience Through Nature
Our work extends to advocating for urban development that seamlessly integrates nature-based solutions. This approach promotes regional resilience, monitors water quality in collaboration with local authorities, and develops educational resources for communities and stewards. We unite scientists, engineers, educators, advocates, and resident stewards to Celebrate, Protect, and Restore (CPR) Houston’s bayous.

🍂 Ready to give your yard waste a second life?

Join us this June for the first workshop in our 2026 Neighborhood Resilience Network Series, a free, hands-on experience exploring simple ways to create healthier bayous, yards, and communities.

Kick off the series with our Yard Waste Workshop as we dive into composting, natural soil enrichment, and easy practices that reduce runoff and support healthy waterways.

What happens in your yard doesn't stay in your yard — it flows straight to our bayous. Reducing yard waste and enriching soil naturally helps limit the pollutants that impact our waterways, making healthy yards and healthy bayous go hand in hand.

Small changes at home. Big impact for our bayous.

When Knowledge Becomes Action

Healthy bayous don't protect themselves. They need a community that pays attention.

For 60 years, Bayou Preservation Association has worked alongside citizen scientists, researchers, volunteers, and neighbors who believed that understanding our waterways was the first step to protecting them.

Through water quality monitoring, restoration planning, and data-driven advocacy, this work has always been powered by community, everyday people who care deeply about the health of our streams and the future we share.

Science helps us see the patterns. Community turns that knowledge into lasting protection.

We're grateful for every person who has shown up, sampled a bayou, or simply cared enough to keep watch. Because of you, this work endures.

Exploration Green has already saved countless Houston homes from flooding.

On May 13th, some of the people who helped make it happen gathered to share that story, and 88 professionals, practitioners, and community leaders showed up to listen.

This spring's Confluence: Where Ideas and Practice Meet spotlighted Exploration Green as a real-world case study in how nature-based infrastructure improves water quality, strengthens flood resilience, and shapes vibrant community spaces right here in Houston.

Featuring Michael Robinson, PLA, ASLA of SWA Group, moderated by Christopher Browne, LEED AP of EHRA Engineering, with panelists David Sharp of Exploration Green Conservancy, Thomas Morrow of Clear Lake City Water, and Christie Taylor of Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service

Thank you to everyone who showed up, asked questions, and made connections. Rooms like this remind us why this work matters.

Grateful to our 2026 partners whose generous support made Confluence possible. Thank you for helping advance this conversation.

🌿 Living Roots Recap: Culture, Story & Native Plants

On Sunday, April 12th, we gathered at Mason Park for our spring Living Roots: A Guided Walk Through Bayou Natives, and it was an experience unlike any other.

28 participants came together to explore the stories, traditions, and cultural significance woven into the native plants along Houston’s bayous.

Led by , Eddie’s background and heritage brought history to life, a powerful reminder that our bayous are living cultural archives rooted in generations of wisdom. 🌱

Thank you to everyone who walked with us, and to Eddie for making this such a memorable and meaningful experience.

Stay tuned for our Fall Guided Walk, more stories, more roots, more connection.

Community Roots & Volunteers 🌿

As we celebrate 60 years of Bayou Preservation Association, we’re reflecting month by month on the people and moments that have shaped our story.

This April, we’re honoring the heart of our work—our community and volunteers.

From early advocacy and cleanup efforts to restoration, education, and stewardship, neighbors, students, families, and dedicated stewards have turned shared concern into meaningful action.

To everyone who has volunteered their time and care for our waterways—thank you. Your commitment continues to sustain and strengthen this work today.

Together, we are building a healthier future for Houston’s bayous.

🔬 Young Citizen Scientists in Action!

On Saturday, April 11, Bayou Preservation partnered with Kendall Neighborhood Library to bring our Watershed Explorer Kits to their STEM workshop.

Families explored the water cycle and how it connects to the health of our local streams and bayous, then took home kits to test their own water quality and observe what shapes a healthy watershed.

Thank you, Kendall Neighborhood Library, for welcoming us and helping young minds discover the natural world right in their own neighborhood!
