At GHIRP, our team brings different stories, cultures, experiences, and connections to the immigrant communities we serve.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re highlighting two members of our team, Sergio and Abi, and a little of what has shaped who they are and the work they do.

🇲🇽 Sergio is proudly Mexican! His community’s experiences with immigration have deeply influenced the path that brought him to GHIRP. After graduating from the University of Virginia, spending time living in central Mexico, and returning to Houston, Sergio knew he wanted his work to remain connected to his family and community. Outside of work, you’ll find him spending time with his siblings and dogs, exploring Houston, freestyle rapping on his commute, or singing Norteñas with his family on their karaoke machine.

🌼 Abi Jimenez joined GHIRP in 2023 and says she found an organization where everyone shares the same mission: helping the most vulnerable in our community with love and kindness. Her favorite days are the ones spent laughing with the people she loves, enjoying movies, or sitting on the couch with her husband.

Their stories are different, but both reflect something we value deeply at GHIRP: the experiences we carry with us help shape the way we show up for our community.
This Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the people, cultures, families, and stories that are part of GHIRP and the communities we are privileged to serve.

Thank you, Kacey Musgraves! We are incredibly grateful to Kacey Musgraves for gifting members of our GHIRP team tickets to enjoy her concert in Houston last night. ✨

But our gratitude goes far beyond an amazing night of music.

Kacey has continued to use her voice and her platform to stand with immigrant communities. Recently, after one of her concerts, she encouraged her followers to support immigrant children and donate to our work providing free legal services to immigrants in need.

At a time when immigrant children and families are facing so much uncertainty, having people willing to speak up, bring attention to this work, and inspire others to get involved makes a real difference.

NO CHILD SHOULD HAVE TO GO TO COURT ALONE! Yesterday, GHIRP and the Children’s Immigration Law Academy (CILA) brought together pro bono attorneys and partners in response to an urgent need.

At a time when federally funded legal services for immigrant children have ended, children’s cases are being advanced rapidly through the courts and asylum office. GHIRP is seeing a unprecedented number of children scheduled for Individual Hearings, the final stage of their immigration court proceedings. CILA and GHIRP is organizing a community response to ensure that no child is required to defend themselves against deportation in court without a lawyer.

If you were unable to attend yesterday’s meeting, you can still help. We are asking attorneys to become Kids’ Court Champions and support children with legal filings, court preparation, appearances, appellate briefing and other critical stages of their cases.

By volunteering, you can:

💚 Protect due process for immigrant children
💚 Help ensure no child has to face immigration court without representation
💚 Support fairness and integrity in the court process

You will not do this work alone. GHIRP and CILA will provide resources, technical assistance, training, and mentorship to support pro bono volunteers.

For the September/October issue, we are highlighting the Galveston-Houston Immigrant Representation Project (GHIRP). Their message is clear: No one should have to navigate the immigration system alone. GHIRP provides compassionate, trauma-informed legal representation and reliable immigration information when it matters most.

Since launching in 2020, GHIRP has helped children, survivors, and families navigate an incredibly complex legal system. In the 2024–2025 fiscal year alone, the GHIRP Galveston team represented 182 individuals and provided Know-Your-Rights presentations to 269 people.

Through its partnership with St. Vincent’s House, GHIRP also offers free immigration legal consultations and monthly Know-Your-Rights presentations for Galveston County residents, held every second Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.

Our Managing Attorney, Alexa Sendukas, was recently featured in The Nation Magazine, raising awareness of what is happening to unaccompanied immigrant children.

“It’s very clear that this is a comprehensive targeting of children to accelerate their deportation,” Sendukas said.

The article highlights a deeply concerning reality: immigration enforcement targeting children and families is increasing at the same time that access to legal representation for unaccompanied children is being dismantled. At GHIRP alone, we currently represent around 500 young clients, even though the federal funding that supported this work has expired.

These children are navigating an extraordinarily complex immigration system. Some are facing accelerated proceedings with fewer lawyers available to represent them. GHIRP’s youngest client is just 4 years old.

Alexa and our team continue to show up because children deserve due process, protection, and the opportunity to be heard.

On August 5, GHIRP Managing Attorney Alexa Sendukas joined immigrant rights advocates from across the country for a national press briefing to discuss the future of legal representation for unaccompanied immigrant children.

The discussion followed the federal government's announcement of its intent to award a $150 million cooperative agreement to a private Houston law firm to provide legal services for children in ORR custody beginning August 15, 2026.

As Alexa shared during the briefing:

"At a time of heightened ICE enforcement against immigrant children and families, especially in Texas, children need urgent legal assistance more than ever. They deserve lawyers who are trained in child-friendly and trauma-informed representation who know how to effectively advocate on their behalf and ensure their rights are respected."

Every child deserves due process, dignity, and a meaningful opportunity to be heard.

Update since the briefing: A federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to release approximately $65 million in unpaid fees to nonprofit organizations that provided legal services to unaccompanied migrant children facing deportation. We welcome this important development and will continue to keep our community informed as we learn whether GHIRP and our partners receive the funds owed and what this means for the future of legal representation for immigrant children.
