Houston Food Bank Student Heroes The Houston Food Bank Student Heroes program is part of the Houston Food Bank's mission to develop more high school student's into leaders for the future

Now operating from a new, 308,000 square-foot facility, the Houston Food Bank is the nation’s largest size food bank in the Feeding America network and source of food for hunger relief charities in 18 southeast Texas counties. A network of nearly 500 food pantries, soup kitchens, senior centers and other agencies, feeding a total of 137,000 people each week, provides more than 70 million pounds of

food and prepared meals annually. Fresh produce, meat and nonperishables are distributed from the new warehouse at 535 Portwall, and hot meals are prepared and distributed from Keegan Center, a 15,000 square-foot industrial kitchen. Additional community services range from nutrition education to assistance with food stamp applications and hands-on job training. Red Barrels offer a convenient way for grocery shoppers to donate nonperishables for their neighbors in need. The Houston Food Bank, founded in 1982, is a certified member of Feeding America, the nation’s food bank network. The organization plans to grow to an annual distribution of 120 million pounds of food by 2018.

We are thrilled to introduce our Student Hero Executive Board for the 2026-2027 year! These individuals have put in commendable effort as a Student Hero, and they continued to shine through during the board application process.

As board members, they will dedicate their time and attention towards improving this program for all Student Heroes, expanding this program’s reach in the Houston area, and collaborating with Houston Food Bank to provide food for better lives.

We are so excited to see what amazing things these students will do for the Student Heroes. Congratulations again to our new Executive Board!

Hey Student Heroes! We are so excited to introduce our second workshop: Student Advocacy Challenge. At this workshop, you will be able to learn and develop necessary advocacy skills so you can make the changes you want to see in your community.

LEARN FROM THE PROS | Our Government Relations team will give you practical tools and insider knowledge to turn your ideas into real-world advocacy.

THE 60-SECOND PITCH | Time to create! In small groups, you’ll design and pitch a social media concept. Whether it’s a TikTok trend, an IG post, or a bold Reel, show us how you’d inspire others to contact elected officials or get involved in local causes. Best strategies win prizes!

Be sure to sign up on Galaxy and fill out the form provided on the QR code. You must have both forms filled out prior to attending. Can’t wait to see everyone there!

The new Student Hero applications for summer session is now open on our website! We have also provided the link below and in our bio.

Please keep in mind that you must have already volunteered 12 hours at the Houston Food Bank prior to applying. Other requirements to apply will be detailed in the form. Please also double check which session you want to apply for (Summer 1 or Summer 2), as our Summer Session is split into two months to account for the varying availabilities during this season.

All applications are due on April 30th.

We cannot wait to welcome more Student Heroes into our program. Let’s continue to expand our efforts in alleviating food insecurity in our great community!

Hey Student Heroes!

Get ready for our first workshop of the session: a college panel workshop. We have invited our senior Student Heroes to share all about their college application season so you can not only get advice for when it is your time to apply, but you can also celebrate the achievements of your fellow members. Join us on April 11th, 2026 at noon!

All you have to do is sign-up on Galaxy through the “Opportunities” tab (not the “Events” one).

Hey Student Heroes!

Thank you for coming to the Spring 2026 orientation! It was great to regroup with our returning Student Heroes, and we were so excited to meet the new members of our program.

We hope you enjoyed orientation and made some new friends. We also hoped that you were able to refresh your knowledge on production skills and learn some new information that will help you this session.

Hey incoming and current Student Heroes!

We are so excited to welcome everyone to the Spring 2026 session! As always, to kick off the session, we will be having orientation for both groups of Student Heroes. Just a reminder: all Student Heroes must go to orientation before volunteering for the session. This post will go over what orientation will look like.

For returning Student Heroes, meaning you were a Student Hero in the Fall 2025 session, your orientation will be on the 10th of January in the morning. We will go over some refreshers for program expectations, introduce our new liaison, and give you an opportunity to provide feedback on what you want to see in the future for this program.

For new Student Heroes, meaning you just applied during fall 2025 OR you were a Student Hero but just not for the Fall 2025 session, your orientation will be on the 17th of January. This orientation will be a little longer as the Executive Board, Mr. Nathan, and Ms. Alia will introduce you to the program and take the time to prepare you for your first time volunteering as a Student Hero.

Both orientations will be at the Community Room in the Houston Food Bank, and yes, food is provided for both days!

We cannot wait to see all of you guys at orientation!

Hey Fall Student Heroes!

We hope you are doing well and are excited for the holidays! To celebrate all the hard work you have done over this session, we wanted to host a holiday social/potluck. At this social, we will be having several fun activities such as building gingerbread houses, celebrating the winning house (whichever house it may be), and making Christmas cards for a cause.

Since this is a potluck, please also bring a holiday dish with you. The sign up to bring food is on Galaxy.

Also, if you need hours, we will be giving hour incentives if you help us decorate the cards!

This social will be on Saturday, December 20th at the Houston Food Bank from 4-7pm. If you want to come, which we highly encourage you to, be sure to RSVP on Galaxy.

Attention Student Hero applicants!

If you want to apply to be a Student Hero for the Spring 2026 session, please note that the deadline to submit your application is December 1st, 2025 at 11:59pm!

As a reminder, all high school student who have attained 12 hours by November 1st have received an invitation to apply for the Student Heroes program.

Please keep this deadline in mind! We look forward to reviewing all of your applications.
