The Story of Team Relay Nation
Who is Team Relay Nation?
We are Relayers from around the United States, and the World! We believe our motto of One World-One Team-One Hope!
It all started in 2013 on the fantail of a cruise ship slipping through the inside passage of Alaska while participating in Relay For Life at Sea. Four Relayers were nearing the completion of the cruise and discussed what if there was a team that went to Tacoma, Washington for the 30th Anniversary of Relay? The ball started to roll when Lori Kuhuski, Founding Team Captain, got back to land. She worked with staff in Tacoma and Team Relay Nation was born. That first year we had 32 people join from 11 states, 2 countries, spanning 14 times zones, three oceans and nearly 10,000 miles. After such a successful event, where would the Team go from here? Team Relay Nation leaders work with potential host Relays and work out all the details.Once the location is determined, Team Relay Nation members register for the host Relay and are asked to raise a minimum of $100 in personal fundraising for that event, many of us raising more than the minimum. Some members are further asked to participate in the host event by being speakers, helping with ceremonies, or just share ideas of what other local events do. These are things our teammates are happy to help the host Relay with, along with bringing lots of laughter and a whole lot of shenanigans! In 2015, the team attended Relay For Life of Las Vegas to help bring several Relays into one new venue. In 2016, Relay For Life of Greater Niagara was selected to help promote Relay For Life in that area. In 2017, we made the jump over the pond and attended Relay For Life of Donegal, in Letterkenny, Ireland. Team Relay Nation took this opportunity to take our mission overseas and 16 made the International trip.
