The Roadless Rule has protected millions of acres of wild public lands for 25 years. But now, it’s at risk of being repealed.

Michigan currently has roughly 16,000 acres of roadless areas within our National Forests (only 0.5% of our Forest Service land). The 2001 Roadless Rule protects these lands from new road construction, large-scale logging, and mining. 🌲🌳

When this rule was created, the U.S. Forest Service held more than 600 public meetings to hear from people across the country. Today, there are none.

So we’re hosting our own.

Join Sierra Club Michigan Chapter, Keweenaw Youth for Climate Action, Keweenaw Indivisible, and community members on June 25 at the U.J. Noblet Forestry Building in Houghton, MI from 6:30-8:30pm for a powerful evening of storytelling, community, and action.

We’re inviting attendees to share 2-3 minutes of testimony about what public lands mean to them. When you register, we’ll send guidance and resources to help you prepare.

Not into public speaking? That’s okay! Come listen, learn, and be part of a community standing up for our forests.

This event is for everyone who loves public lands: hikers, climbers, hunters, paddlers, wildlife lovers, and more.

Space is limited, so reserve your spot today! Check the comments for registration info. ⬇👀

Whew, what a night! Sometimes it helps to reminder our community what our founding fathers committed to 250 years ago to motivate us all today.

While they enshrined our nation's values in the Constitution, we must today continue to defend them!

And boy we do look good in period-appropriate attire.

Should public participation depend on who can afford to take time off work? 🤔 At this week's work session, the Houghton County Board of Commissioners placed a proposal on the June 9 agenda that would move its Regular Meetings from 6:00 p.m. to daytime hours. (See video for the workgroup discussion)

The county already holds Public Work Sessions during the workday. The Regular Meeting is different. It is currently the one county board meeting scheduled so working residents can attend without taking time off work. It is where residents can observe their government, hear discussion before decisions are made, and address elected officials during public comment.

➡️ The purpose of a public meeting is public participation. A proposal that would make participation harder for working residents belongs in a public discussion.

Moving the Regular Meeting into the middle of the workday would make participation easier for county officials and employees and harder for many of the people they represent. Teachers, construction workers, tradespeople, utility workers, delivery drivers, many healthcare workers, and others may be forced to use limited leave time, rearrange work schedules, lose income, or make other sacrifices simply to participate.

Public access should not depend on who can afford to take time off work. Once the meeting is moved, the burden of participation shifts from government to the people.

‼️ Keweenaw Indivisible is asking members to attend the Board meeting and participate in public comment before the Board votes. You will have up to 3 minutes. If you believe that our county government should remain accessible to working residents, please be in the room.

Tuesday, June 9 | 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

250 years ago WE The People risked everything!

That is the theme of Keweenaw Indivisible’s Bridgefest float for this year’s “Keweenaw True Red, White, and Blue” parade.

We are looking for people to walk with the float as George Washington, Betsy Ross, Abigail Adams, and other Revolutionary-era figures to draw a line between the fight for freedom and representation then, and the fight to protect democracy now.

If you are tired of watching attacks on public education, civil rights, unions, libraries, elections, and basic democratic norms while everyone is told to stay quiet, this is a chance to be part of something impossible to ignore.

The parade is Friday evening, June 12. Interested in joining us? Comment below or DM us and we’ll send you more info!
