Even with all this snow, spring will be here before we know it (we’re really manifesting here at KISMA😅)! And with warmer days, you know what that means…invasive species will be emerging!

For National Invasive Species Awareness Week, we’re sharing information about invasive species and what YOU can do to help support us in protecting our environment, as well as our native plant and animal life. Stay tuned for updates throughout the week to learn how you can make an impact🌎

Show support for this state of Michigan proposal to ban harmful invasive plant species. In particular for the KISMA service area (Baraga, Houghton, and Keweenaw counties), barberry and common and glossy buckthorns harm our forests by outcompeting native plant species and changing food webs. These plants also increase the risk of tick-borne diseases such as Lyme for humans and our dog companions by increasing habitat for black-legged (i.e., deer) tick populations.

This week is KISMA’s oak wilt awareness week!

Remember, to minimize the risk of spreading oak wilt disease, avoid pruning oaks between April 15-July 15. The safest time to prune an oak tree is November-March, when sap beetles are not active and less likely to spread oak wilt spores.

Follow along to learn more!

All too often in our gardens and landscapes, we think of static compositions of carefully placed and managed plants. But our approach can be more dynamic—and arguably more rewarding than that — by taking advantage of plants’ natural abilities to reproduce and proliferate. Learn how to design gardens that consider the reproductive abilities of plants, the ecological processes that affect those plants, and the wildlife that those plants can support. Drawing from 35 years of observation and analysis on his home property, Larry will show how this interactive approach can result in experientially rich, easily managed landscapes that give new meaning to the phrase “partnership with nature.

If the thought of dead and dying hemlock and fir forests is scary to you too, then listen up!

Help prevent the spread of these scary forest pests this holiday season.

Remember, burn it where you buy it, don’t move firewood.
And don’t bring Christmas trees with you on vacation, strapped to the top of your family’s station wagon this year. Grab a tree locally to avoid transporting balsam woolly adelgid across the state.

We had a great time gardening with Girl Scout Troop 5625 at the Kestner Park gardens.

The troop has been maintaining a garden at Kestner Park along side the Keweenaw Wild Ones, both working towards restoring habitat to the banks of Huron Creek.

Together we learned about garden invasive species, and the reasons for planting native plants, like protecting water quality, and feeding native pollinators.
Next we ripped up a full bag of knapweed, tansy, and mugwort, before planting some flowers bulbs in their place 🌼
