Let’s Celebrate—HKCGS is 20!

Woo Hoo! It’s Houghton Keweenaw County Genealogical Society’s 20th anniversary!

For it’s November meeting, the Houghton Keweenaw County Genealogical Society will be meeting for dinner—Dutch treat—at The Hut, in Kearsarge, to commemorate the occasion. Cake will be provided. Spouses, friends, and anyone interested genealogy or in becoming a member are all welcome. The dinner meeting will be Tues., November 12 at 6:00pm. “The Houghton-Keweenaw County Genealogical Society will host "I'll See You in Court: Houghton County Circuit Court Files at the Michigan Tech Archives." Please join archivist Emily Riippa as she discusses some of the interesting (and occasionally surprising) things you may discover in these documents, which cover roughly the period 1850-1980. Tuesday, October 8th, 6:00PM, at the Portage Lake District Library.”

Second Saturday at the Michigan Tech Archives
From noon to 5 p.m. tomorrow (Sept. 14) the reading room of the Michigan Tech Archives will be open to the public for Second Saturday. The Archives will offer the full range of its research support services and genealogy assistance during these hours.
This is the first Second Saturday of the 2019-2020 academic year. The next Second Saturday will be Oct. 12.

Representatives from the Copper Range Historical Society and the Painesdale Mine & Shaft will be giving an overview of their respective organizations at the Houghton Keweenaw Genealogical Society's April meeting. The CRHS will focus on its displays, which help to create a sense of what life was like during the copper mining boom in southern Houghton County. The PM&S' main focus is on maintaining Champion #4 in Painesdale, Michigan, and its importance during that era, giving visitors a firsthand look at what all it has to offer. The Copper Range Mining Company was one of the largest, longest-lived, and most profitable mining companies in the Keweenaw region. The meeting, which is open to the public, will be held Tuesday, April 9, at 6:00pm, at the Portage Lake District Library, in Houghton. For information email [email protected].
