🏞️ 100 Tons of Sediment Kept Out of the Fraser River!

That's right! This year, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) removed an estimated 100 tons of sediment (10 truckloads!) from Denver Water's Fraser River sediment pond below Berthoud Pass.

🚧 In 2010, Denver Water and CDOT, in cooperation with Learning By Doing (LBD), constructed the pond to capture traction sand used on Berthoud Pass before it travels downstream and impacts aquatic habitat in the Fraser River.

🐟 The results? Less sediment entering the river and healthier habitat for trout! The benefits are evident in the return of diverse aquatic habitats, including deep pools, riffles, and runs.

This is a great example of how partnerships and ongoing maintenance can make a lasting difference for Grand County's rivers and streams!

🏞️ From Planning to Projects: Improving Grand County's Rivers and Streams!

Last Friday, Learning By Doing (LBD) took our Stakeholder Advisory Committee (SHAC) into the field to see stream restoration in action!

The SHAC has played an important role in guiding the update to Grand County's Stream Management Plan (SMP), helping identify and prioritize opportunities to improve the health of our rivers and streams.

During the tour, we visited the recently completed Kaibab Park Stream Improvement Project along the Fraser River, as well as several of the highest-priority restoration sites identified through the SMP update.

It was a great opportunity to see restoration work firsthand, discuss future projects, and connect the planning process to real opportunities for improving river health across Grand County.

💧 Healthy rivers take partnership.

Learning By Doing brings together partners from across the Continental Divide to monitor stream health, identify priorities, and put restoration projects on the ground in Grand County.

From the newly completed Kaibab Park Stream Improvement Project to planning for the upcoming Willow Creek Stream Restoration Project, this work is possible because of strong partnerships and community support.

Learning By Doing members recently got out on the Fraser River to check out the newly completed Kaibab Park Stream Improvement Project in Granby. We even saw a mink playing in one of the new wood structures!

It was great to see the improvements firsthand—including new deep pools, point bars, and more diverse habitat for fish and aquatic life. 🐟🌿

We’re excited to see how this stretch of river continues to evolve and improve over time!

Several Learning By Doing members recently visited the newly completed Kaibab Park Stream Improvement Project on the Fraser River—and we encourage you to check out the improvements!

As you explore the project area, you’ll notice three new deep pools, approximately 4–6 feet deep, along with several new point bars that add diversity and habitat to the river.

🌱 Please tread lightly on the new point bars. Newly planted willows are working hard to get established and will help stabilize the banks and improve riparian habitat over time.

💧 And a quick safety reminder: The new pools are significantly deeper than they were before construction, so please use extra caution with children and dogs around the water.

Enjoy the restored river—and help us give this newly completed project a little time and space to grow! 🌿

National Public Lands Day is this weekend!!!

NEW NPLD PROJECT ADDED:
The USFS needs help building some buck and rail fence on Cottonwood Pass to protect fragile habitat areas. This is an all skills level project located near Granby and Hot Sulphur Springs.
