The stream improvement project on the Fraser River in Kaibab Park is complete and it looks so good! There's 4 new deep pools for fish and aquatic species. We will continue to monitoring this project to see if our project goals were achieved.

The Kaibab Park Stream Improvement Project will wrap up this week. Monitoring will continue for several years to determine proejct success. Here's a video of a large willow transplant on top of one of the new large wood structures.

The Kaibab Park Stream Improvement Project is underway! Crews are out at Kaibab Park now digging the structures that will increase habitat diversity for trout and other aquatic species. Next week crews will narrow the channel to boost riffle flushing and support healthier macroinvertebrate communities. Thanks to Stillwater Sciences for the design work and FlyWater for the construction!

🚧 Wondering what's happening in the Fraser River at Kaibab Park?

Starting August 13, Grand County Learning By Doing (LBD) and project partners will begin the Kaibab Park Stream Improvement Project in Granby. Construction is expected to be complete by September 2, 2026.

This project will improve aquatic habitat by installing large wood structures throughout the stream. While they may look like fallen trees, these carefully designed structures help restore natural stream processes and create healthier habitat for fish and other aquatic life.

🪰 What can aquatic insects tell us about river health? 🪰

Quite a lot!

Macroinvertebrates—mayflies, stoneflies, caddisflies, and other aquatic insects—are some of the best indicators of stream health. Because many species are sensitive to pollution, warming water, and habitat changes, their presence (or absence) helps us understand how a river is functioning.

LBD monitors these communities throughout the Fraser, Colorado, and Williams Fork watersheds to track changes over time and measure the success of restoration projects.

Healthy bugs = healthier rivers for fish and people.

Grand County began releasing an additional 75 cfs from Lake Granby yesterday. The water is retired Bunte-Highline Ditch water that's been captured in the C-BT. This is part of the Operational Framework Agreement between Northern Water and Grand County and it is the first time in use.
