🍁Don't rake them away! A blanket of fallen leaves provides food, shelter, and winter protection for a variety of wildlife.

TIP: Rather than removing leaves, move them as necessary to designated areas of the yard where they can stay for the winter.

It's not easy being green (and an invasive species) in our park!

Our Park Biologists work hard to restore the native habitat of our beautiful 5,500 acres, but they can't do it alone!

Join Park Biologists and help steward Hot Springs National Park through invasive species removal!

Invasive Species Removal Work Dates:

October 24th | 9am to 1pm

November 21st | 9am to 1pm

December 19th | 9am to 1pm

Program details will be emailed to participants one week before program. Volunteers should plan to wear long pants, closed-toed shoes, sun protection and bring a refillable water bottle. Park Biologists will provide training, tools, gloves, and safety protection.

If you are just starting your habitat improvement journey, this post is for you!

1️⃣We highly recommend that you set up a time to meet your local Private Lands Biologist. Quail Forever in Arkansas and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission have Private Lands Biologists stationed across the state. Both organizations have staff that provide FREE technical assistance to landowners, and they can help landowners navigate voluntary cost incentive programs that are available through state and federal agencies.

2️⃣Learn as much as you can about native plants! Native vegetation is so important for the health of not only pollinators and wildlife, but entire ecosystems. If your goal is to attract more pollinators to your property, start to incorporate plants that are native to your area.

3️⃣To truly appreciate something, you need to make a connection. If you want to learn about the pollinators visiting your property, consider downloading the iNaturalist app onto your phone. You just need to create a free account to sign-up. The iNaturalist app will allow you to take pictures and videos of any pollinator that visits your property, and once you submit an observation, you will likely be able to identify the pollinator! Now, the quality of images and videos matter for identification. Once you identify the pollinator, you can determine if they have a host plant, need certain nesting sites, when they emerge, and etc. That can better inform your management decisions moving forward.

🍂 Millions of dragonflies are on the move! 🐉

Each fall, enormous numbers of dragonflies migrate south across North America—some traveling hundreds or even thousands of miles toward Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.

Species like the Common Green Darner, Black Saddlebags, and Wandering Glider are among the long-distance travelers making this remarkable seasonal journey. And unlike monarch butterflies, dragonfly migration often happens almost unnoticed overhead.
