**What are the triggers for heart disease in women suffering from endometriosis? “Usually it is the chronic inflammation caused by endometriosis, oxidative stress and the abnormal lipid profile. These three play a key role in upping the cardiac risk in women. The chronic inflammation accelerates plaque formation. The oxidative stress increases the vascular inflammation while abnormal lipids increase the atherogenesis or the process of forming plaques in the layers of arteries. All of this, therefore, results in increasing the thickness of the coronary vessels and causing myocardial infarction,” adds Dr Lal

One of my "go to" phrases when I talk about endometriosis and endosalpingiosis is "Is it rare or is it just under-diagnosed?"

While endometriosis is becoming...well, easier to diagnose, for lack of a better phrase, we are still leaps and bounds behind where we should be for obtaining proper diagnosis, pain management, and long term care. The current numbers estimate that 190 million women suffer with endometriosis worldwide but how accurate is that number? Endometriosis has a history of being grossly misdiagnosed, particularly in African American women.

"A study by the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology reported that 40% Black women who were told they had PID actually had endometriosis."

In many cases, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is caused by sexually transmitted infections. The course of action to treat PID or STIs is vastly different from any treatment options currently available for endometriosis. Long story short, these women are suffering even more by being misdiagnosed with PID when they should be being screened for chronic diseases such as endometriosis.
