The REGARD Meeting for July 17 has been cancelled.

Next meeting will be August 21, 2018.

06/15/2018

Join us on Tuesday, June 19th at St Luke's Episcopal Church Fellowship Hall, 5 - 6 pm.

DARLA THURBER, chief diversity officer at the National Park College. Darla will be our program presenter.

Most of you probably saw the newspaper article earlier this month by Beth Reed, education reporter for the Sentinel-Record, NPC NAMED ONE OF 18 "MOST PROMISING." The story reported that "National Park College was recognized as one of 18 Most Promising Places to work in Community Colleges to Work in Community Colleges … ."

The award is presented annually to community colleges and technical colleges "who show a commitment to diversity through best-in-class student and staff recruitment and retention practices, inclusive learning and working environments, and meaningful community service and engagement opportunities." NPC was one of eight applicants that had a perfect score.

Darla will share what they are doing to earn this award. NPC has a Diversity Club and perhaps we'll be able to discuss getting together on community service opportunities. Below is more about Darla.

Darla Thurber has served as Special Assistant to the President since 2014 and added the role of Chief Diversity Officer in 2017 at National Park College. And, as recently as last week, she was appointed Interim Vice President of External Affairs for the College. She has worked in higher education for over 19 years. A native of Hot Springs, she completed her Associate of Arts degree at National Park College and her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Arkansas. Darla has taught customer service and telephone etiquette classes, and has presented on various topics including continuous process improvement, thriving in the workplace, and job crafting. She is married to Ray and has a seven-year-old son, Marshall. Darla enjoys fishing and camping on Lake Ouachita with her family.

See you at the meeting. This will be a great meeting to bring guests.

Update!

Meeting topic change for Tuesday, April 17.

The discussion includes; current events, Exercise on Diversity and Culture, and discussion of the 2018 Seeds of Peace.

The program on Teenage Pregnancy will be next month.

04/11/2018

Join us Tuesday, April 17th at St. Luke’s 5:00-6:00 pm. Janet McAdams, Vice Chair of the Teen Pregnancy Program will be our presenter.

The Facts:
Teen pregnancy and childbearing are at historic lows and there has been impressive progress on both fronts in all 50 states.

The teen birth rate in Arkansas declined 56% between 1991 and 2016. Even so, in 2015 there were 3,677 births to teens. Most teen births in Arkansas (77%) are to older teens (age 18-19). It is also the case that 17% of all teen births were to teens who already had a child. The public cost of teen childbearing in 2015 totaled $37 million. Teen birth rates have fallen for all racial and ethnic groups, and in some cases the gap in teen birth rates by race/ethnicity has narrowed, but disparities remain.

The teen pregnancy rate, which includes all pregnancies rather than just those that resulted in a birth, has also fallen steeply, by 48 % between 1988 and 2013 (the most recent data available). As of 2013 there were 5,610 pregnancies among teens age 15 to 19 in Arkansas.

Still too many! Arkansas is still #1 with 34 births per 1,000 teen girls, age 15-19 in 2016! What can we do help with this concern?

Attend the meeting to hear how organizations are addressing the concern.
