Burn Ban Passed – Thursday, May 7th 2026

The Fall River County Commissioners passed a county burn ban on Thursday, May 7th 2026 to go into effect immediately.

First, the county burn ban is for areas outside the municipalities and outside the Black Hills Fire Protection District. Those areas have their own bans and regulations. So, if you are SOUTH of the Cheyenne River or EAST of SD Highway 79 open fires and fireworks are banned when the Grassland Fire Danger Index is HIGH, VERY HIGH, or EXTREME.

See the National Weather Service for the SD Grassland Fire Danger Index: https://www.weather.gov/unr/rfd

Full burn ban document will be posted to the county website.

SD Wildland Fire pile burning permits for the Black Hills Forest Fire Protection District expired in March and will not be reissued. Fire danger levels are extremely high in South Dakota and with recent Red Flag Warnings, conditions are primed for fast-moving wildfires. It only takes one spark.
Do your part this summer:
• Stop all open burning,
• Avoid activities that create sparks (dragging chains, use of welding equipment outdoors, parking hot vehicles in tall dry grass), and
• Check weather and restrictions before working outdoors.
Let’s work together to keep South Dakota safe.

Today we joined in the official opening of the new South Dakota Wildland Fire station here in Hot Springs. This has been a long awaited and much needed improvement for our great partners that we are lucky enough to have here supporting us in our home town. It’s an even greater appreciation that the building is named after our hometown hero, Trampus Haskvitz, who gave his life protecting our county in the Coal Canyon fire in 2011. We are very grateful for the state and their continued support and cooperation day after day, congratulations on your new station!

We would like to give a huge thank you to the Hot Springs Masonic Lodge for the donation of a state of the art fire suppression tool that cool be very useful in the future of a structure fire with limited manpower. This tool is able to be thrown inside of a well involved fire and immediately cools the fire to give first responders more time to initiate an attack. Pictured are Assistant Chief Hill and Firefighter Shaw along with members of the Masonic Lodge. We thank you again for this generous donation!

Thank you!

Thank you!

With the rough start to fire season, we reached out to our Yeti representative to request a donation and they hooked us up with 10 Yeti water bottles to donate to the Hot Springs Volunteer Fire Department. (We added a couple extra because I told them I had a dozen and didn’t want to by a liar….. 😆) Thank you Yeti, for supporting our community!

Thank you to all of the firefighters that are out serving our community whenever it’s needed. Always happy to be able to find a small way to show our appreciation.
