Some people become part of a community because of the work they do. Others become part of it because of the way they make people feel. Jim Rupe is one of those special people.

Nominated by Megan Whitmore, Jim is a familiar and much-loved face around Hiawatha. For the past 10.5 years, he has served Hiawatha Public Schools-USD 415 as a crossing guard near the middle school, helping students and citizens safely navigate the First Street crossing.

But Jim does more than help people cross the street. He makes people feel seen.

Jim knows everyone. He waves at everyone. And he might even call you by name as you drive by. That big smile and happy wave have become part of the rhythm of life in Hiawatha — and for many, seeing Jim is one of the best parts of the day.

And somewhere along the way, something special happened: people started looking for Jim, too.

They look for his smile. They watch for his wave. They notice when he's there — and they notice when he's not.

For 10.5 years, Jim has been doing more than helping people safely cross First Street. He's been creating connections, spreading joy and reminding us how much a simple smile, a wave, and a kind heart can mean.

Thank you, Jim, for showing up every day and making a little brighter. We are lucky to have you.

What a fun morning! We celebrated Shirley Foster who has a September birthday. Joey Montes also has a September birthday, but was unable to make it. Linda Burnett received a cute Autumn themed gift bag from her "Secret Sister". Everyone enjoyed the yummy cupcakes provided by Linda Messer. Twelve members and friends were in attendance. Always a treat to spend time with friends💕
