College Settlement Outdoor School Program

College Settlement Outdoor School Program The College Settlement is a 501(C)3 non-profit organization. Our Outdoor School has many weekday and weekend youth and community programs.

Our three part program has many options for scheduling, activity choice and areas of focus. This enables us to custom fit a program specifically for each school. Our programs are kid-centered, paced at a rate that enables kids to build relationships with classmates, and spend quality time exploring the natural ecology of the area. Overnight trips have that intangible magic that makes them the high

light of many students’ elementary and middle school years. We work with students from all sorts of backgrounds, and our programs are intentionally designed to foster inclusion. During each experience at the Outdoor School, we strive to complement the school science curriculum, offering experiential-based lessons that enhance students’ ability to understand the topics being presented. We also strive to incorporate lessons that encompass math and language arts skills. We understand the pressures put upon schools to cover a wide range of curriculum materials, and work with school staff to assure that goals are met and that students value the information they receive. In the spring of 2003, the organization leased 20 acres to Pennypack Farm Education Center for Sustainable Agriculture, in order to offer reciprocal services and further the cause of organic farming and sound environmental agricultural practices. We strive to reflect our feelings about people's relationship to, and their effect on the environment. Our ultimate goal is for students to develop an awareness of the environment that will lead to an understanding of natural balances, thereby shaping a positive environmental ethic to guide their future behaviors. We believe a student should leave the Outdoor School a more versatile, knowledgeable child than when he or she arrived and should acquire an intensified appreciation of the environment during his or her stay. With over 235 acres, there is plenty of area to explore. Use of the more distant parts of the property for programming is encouraged! Of the 235 acres, approximately 100 are mowed and provide an abundance of open space. Over 90 acres are wooded and about 40 acres are farmed and 20 acres are leased to Pennypack Farm for Sustainable Agriculture – an organic Community Sponsored Agriculture farming facility with which we coordinate programs. A three-acre lake, acres of wetlands and a variety of small streams and springs provide opportunity for aquatic study along the headwaters of the Pennypack Creek. College Settlement Outdoor School

We are seeking a small group of people to serve on the Alumni Association Leadership Group, and a larger group to serve on the Alumni Association Volunteer Group.

The Alumni Association Leadership Group is a group that meets to discuss the business of the Alumni Association, such as planning reunions and other alumni events; determining the allocation of funds; planning an annual alumni fund-raising effort; etc.
• Meetings are held either in-person or virtually depending on the day and time, with the ability to Zoom if a member is remotely located or unable to attend in person.
• We will hold a meeting every other month, on average.

The Alumni Association Volunteer Group is a support group that helps at events (like the annual June Supper and the Fall Dinner and Campfire); assists in outreach via social media; and/or assists with an annual fundraising effort.
• Occasional meetings will likely be held by Zoom or email, to arrange/assign tasks for each specific event or effort.

The first meeting of the Alumni Leadership Group will be on Wednesday, March 16 at 6:00 PM in Horsham.

Interested individuals can also join the meeting by Zoom.

Thanks for your help!

This GivingTuesday, we're on a mission to bring the bees indoors at College Settlement, providing our campers with a close-up view of these vital pollinators.

In 2021, we brought hives and bees to our camp, enriching our 235-acre haven with the wonders of nature. Now, we're taking the next step in our apiary initiative—constructing an indoor observable bee hive at our Overnight Camp and a mobile version for Day Camp and school visits.

For every $50 donation made to our GivingTuesday campaign, you will receive one ticket entry for a chance to win four tickets to one of two Lehigh Valley Phantom hockey games.

On GivingTuesday, let's come together to make a real impact! Help us reach our goal by contributing to the $3,000 needed to bring this initiative to life. Your generous donation can make a significant difference. Click the link below to "bee-come" a part of this exciting journey!

Eagle Scout Katherine Schaffer from Hatboro Troop 81G has been working on a super important project: building bat houses! According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife, "Bats are one of the most important and misunderstood animals." Little brown bats can consume 1,200 insects per hour.
Unfortunately, due to a deadly fungus, the little brown bat, once the most common species of bat in Pennsylvania, is now on the state's endangered species list. Building appropriate bat houses is one recommended way to boost their population.
A huge thank you to Hatboro Lumber Co. for their generous donation of wood for this project.
Save the bats!
