Most Updated Report for Crown Lake Beaches
(Horseshoe Bend, AR) – June 26, 2025

Crown Point Resort Swim Beach

- Status: CLOSED (only current closure)

- Reason: Elevated E. coli levels

- Details:
As of June 22, 2025, the Crown Point Resort Swim Beach is closed due to E. coli contamination. This closure is enforced by the Arkansas Department of Health, which regularly monitors water quality at public swim beaches.

The beach will remain closed until two consecutive water samples return to acceptable E. coli levels[1].

Boxhound Marina

- Status: No current closure reported

- Details: There are no recent official reports or news releases indicating that the Boxhound Marina swim beach is closed due to E. coli or other water quality issues.

If the beach is not listed on the Arkansas Department of Health’s closure list, it is considered open. However, always check with Boxhound Marina directly for the most current status, as conditions can change rapidly[1][2].

Crown Lake Aqua Park (at Crown Lake Resort) NOTE: The aqua park is not located in the Swim Beach.

Status: OPEN (for guests)

Details: The Aqua Park at Crown Lake Resort is open for the season, weather permitting. Access is limited to resort and RV park guests. Safety rules apply, including age and supervision requirements, mandatory life jackets, and a waiver for all participants.

There are no current water quality advisories affecting the Aqua Park[3].

Summary Table

| Location/Attraction | Status | Reason/Notes |
|-----------------------------|---------|-------------------------------------------|
| Crown Point Resort Beach | Closed | E. coli contamination (as of June 22, 2025)[1] |
| Boxhound Marina Beach | Open* | No closure reported; check locally for updates[1][2] |
| Crown Lake Aqua Park | Open | For resort/RV guests only, no advisories[3] |

Status for Boxhound is based on absence from official closure lists; always verify locally.

Additional Notes

E. coli Source: The main sources of E. coli contamination are resident Canada geese and feral swine populations in the area[1].

Testing & Reopening: The Arkansas Department of Health will reopen Crown Point Resort Swim Beach only after two consecutive water samples meet safety standards[1].

Other Area Beaches: No current closures for Boxhound Marina or the Aqua Park, but check with local management for any last-minute changes.

🌳 City of Horseshoe Bend, AR – Parks & Recreation

🙌 We want to take a moment to recognize something important…

Recently, the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority generously donated $800 for a dryer City of Horseshoe Bend Animal Control (Animal Wellness Shelter) — a much-needed resource to keep our shelter clean, safe, and operating at its best.

Our Animal Wellness Shelter is proud to have achieved a 90% no-kill rate for 2024 — a tremendous milestone that wouldn’t be possible without the kindness and dedication of community groups like BSP.

Thank you for showing what it means to care, serve, and lift up Horseshoe Bend. 🐕🐾

Here’s the latest on Crown Lake (Crown Point Beach) in Horseshoe Bend, AR:
• The Arkansas Department of Health’s Swim Beach Program indicates that Crown Point Resort swim beach (SB290) was closed on June 20, 2025, due to E. coli levels exceeding the 126 CFU/100 mL standard .
• According to the US Army Corps of Engineers, swim beaches in the Horseshoe Bend area (including the day-use area and campground beach) are closed until two consecutive tests come back within acceptable limits .

🔍 What You Can Do

1. Immediate Public Health Measures
• Beaches should remain closed and signage posted clearly.
• Avoid any water contact (No swimming, wading, boating or water toys).

2. Testing and Reopening Protocol
• The beach will be retested routinely. Two back-to-back samples under the EPA standard (≤ 126 CFU/100 mL) are required for reopening .

3. Investigate Source of Contamination
E. coli spikes typically originate from:
• Canada geese, wild hogs, human or livestock waste .

Steps to take:
• Survey nearby septic systems or drainage that could leak.
• Observe wildlife patterns at the lake—especially geese or hog presence.
• Coordinate testing with Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) and Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ).
• If resources allow, source track samples to determine if contamination is human, animal, or wildlife.

4. Remedial Actions
• For wildlife: use deterrents for geese, restrict feeding, clean droppings.
• For feral hogs: implement trapping or exclusion zones around the beach.
• For septic runoff/ag fields: evaluate and repair systems, use buffer zones near runoff areas.

5. Community Communication
• Notify residents via county/city website and social media.
• Provide clear updates: when closures began, what actions are underway, expected timelines.

6. Reopen with Caution
• Once two consecutive safe samples are achieved, work with ADH and USACE for formal clearance.
• Consider posting a summary report outlining corrective measures taken to rebuild public trust.
