Bats are surrounded by stigma — and we aren’t entirely sure why. Perhaps it’s because of their ominous affiliation with Bram Stoker’s Count Dracula (who could shape-shift into and control the minds of bats), which was endlessly perpetuated by pop culture icons like Bruce Wayne and Ace Ventura — or maybe it’s because they’re so dark and mysterious and unique which makes people think they’re maybe weird or scary.

Here is the easter bat - bunnies were yesterday ;) - Photo by Paul Webala.

The hairy slit-faced bat (Nycteris hispida) looks like a fluffy bunny, doesn't it? These bats live in a large part of Africa, encompassing much of sub-Saharan Africa, with the exception of the Horn of Africa and parts of southern Africa.

This species has been recorded from a wide variety of habitats, ranging from lowland tropical moist forest, into moist savanna, dry savanna, papyrus swamps and marsh. Colonies roost in hollow trees, dense bushes, caves, holes in termite colonies and similar habitats. Colonies range in size from individual and pairs of animals to up to 20 bats. They roost during the day and become active about two hours before dusk. They are known to be very attached to their roosting site, and will return to it even after being frightened away.

N. hispida is a slow flying bat, but very agile and can easily navigate thick and difficult territory. However, they hunt for insects on the surface of leaves or walls more often than catching them in the air. Luckily they are not endangered.
