IN MEMORIAM....DANIEL McCARTNEY 484

Today is the five year anniversary of the line-of-duty death of Deputy Daniel McCartney of the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department who was shot and killed responding to a home-invasion robbery.

Daniel (who we called “Dan-the-man” and Danimal” because if his crazy fitness routines and workouts) started his career with the Hoquiam Police Department. He served six years with HPD as a patrol officer before transferring to Pierce County.

Daniel is in our thoughts and hearts everyday. Daniel’s duty shift here on this world is done; may he Rest In Peace.

Officer Spaur and his K9 partner Officer Niko made a donation to have his car washed by the Grays Harbor Crushers 12U Fastpitch team yesterday. Not sure who donated, Niko or Officer Spaur but it was to help support these girls as they head to the Washington State Championship tournament this weekend in Wenatchee! Good luck girls!

Tonight officers with the Hoquiam Police Officer’s Association and firefighters from the Hoquiam Fire department as well as Mr. and Mrs. Santa Clause who travelled all the way down from the North Pole delivered gifts to six very special families.

We could not have done this without the support of the community and generous donations from organizations such as Shop with a Cop and many members of our awesome strong community. Thank you to everyone who donated and to everyone who bought gifts for these six very loving families.

It was a very special night for a lot of smiling faces and a few tears of joy.

THE GIVING TREE IS UP! 🎄
OK, now that Thanksgiving is officially over and today is the first day of December, our HPD GIVING TREE is officially up in the lobby of the police station at 215-10th Street, right next to the Simpson Ave Bridge.
Since the COVID Grinch cancelled Shop-With-A-Cop this year-where we would have teamed up HPD officers with Hoquiam kids from families who needed a little extra help this holiday season, we are participating in this pandemic-safe-option instead.
With Shop-With-A-Cop, each Cop-Kid team went to breakfast, had photos with Santa, took a lights-and-siren police car parade to WalMart and then went shopping with a $100 gift card.
HPD had participated in Shop-With-Cop since the beginning in 1999 (the first year was shopping at KMart!). We never missed one...until this pandemic kicked us all to the curb for 2020.
So, this year we still received the six families, two from each of our three elementary schools, so these kids and their families could have a little extra help with Christmas gifts! It won't be the same as Shop-With-A-Cop, but we still will make sure each family receives a little something special from our giving tree. 🎄🎁💖
If you want to be part of the GIVING TREE, please stop by our station lobby (which is open 24/7) and select a gift request off the tree. Please wear a mask.
Purchase the item and return it (unwrapped) to the station lobby (make sure you let us know by either returning during the day or press the assistance button after-hours). Make sure to tape the original gift request tag to the present so we get it to the right person.
The kids have made a list of presents for each of their family members. Just like with Shop-With-A-Cop, we want every person in the family to enjoy some holiday cheer by opening a present! 🎁
The gift request are up now and we ask all gifts be returned by Friday, December 11th. That will give us time to wrap and pack them up.
Santa will be making his rounds the following week riding with HPD and HFD on the fire department's ladder truck to drop off each gift bundle to each family in a pandemic-safe-socially-distanced-mask-wearing-manner. 🚒🚓
Each family will also receive a gift certificate to pick up a special holiday meal from Swanson's. 🍽
We are proud to partner with all of our generous community members to make this happen! And we thank all the donors who have already donated cash to the Hoquiam Police Officer's Association to purchase whatever gifts are not selected and purchased off the tree.
We will have it all covered, thanks to all of you! 👍
