🌸 THEY’RE ALMOST HERE! Get Your Feeders Ready, SW PA! 🐦
The Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds are officially on the move! Tracking maps show them reaching Virginia and Kentucky as of late March, which means the first "scouts" should be crossing into Southwestern Pennsylvania by the first week of April.
Want to help these tiny travelers refuel after their 2,000-mile journey? Here is the safe, cheap, and easy gold-standard recipe for nectar:
🥤 THE RECIPE:
1 Part White Granulated Sugar
4 Parts Water
(Example: 1/4 cup sugar to 1 cup water)
🔥 DIRECTIONS:
Mix sugar and water.
Boil briefly to help the sugar dissolve and prevent spoilage.
CRITICAL: Always let it cool completely before filling your feeders!
🚫 IMPORTANT SAFETY TIPS:
NO RED DYE: It’s unnecessary and potentially harmful to their tiny systems.
NO HONEY OR ORGANIC SUGAR: These can cause fatal infections or iron toxicity.
CLEAN OFTEN: Change the nectar every 3–5 days (more often in high heat) to prevent mold.
Get those feeders washed and hanging by next week so you don't miss the early arrivals!

It’s Timberdoodle season! 🪵🐦
Spring migration is officially underway, and the American Woodcock is back with one of nature’s best "dinner shows." Here’s why you should head out at dusk:
The "Peent": Listen for their buzzy nasal call in open fields at twilight. 🎶
The Sky Dance: Watch them spiral hundreds of feet into the air before tumbling back down in a spectacular aerial display. 🌌
Pro-Tip: Find a brushy field 20 minutes after sunset. Stay quiet, listen for the "peent," and watch the horizon! 🔭✨
Have you witnessed a Sky Dance yet this year? Let us know where you’re hearing them! 👇

Did you know 2025 was a record-breaking year for wildfires right here in Pennsylvania? 🔥🌲
The numbers are in, and they are a huge wake-up call:
📊 1,536 wildfires reported across the state.
📉 99% of those were caused by human activity.
🔥 Over 5,500 acres scorched.
Most of these fires happen in the spring and start from something as simple as burning yard waste or trash. It only takes one spark and a dry breeze to lose control. 💨
Let’s do our part to keep PA green and our communities safe this year! 🧑‍🚒🙌
✅ Check for local burn bans before lighting a fire.
✅ Never leave a fire unattended.
✅ Make sure your embers are soaking wet and cold to the touch before leaving.
Stay safe, everyone! 🌲💪
