The Northern California Youth Policy Coalition’s written and proposed bill SB 721 by Senator Dahle would allow for students to engage in a one day excused absence for Career Technical Education engagement. It’s important that we set up our students for future career readiness and success in high school and that’s the intent of this bill.

The California Transition Alliance (CATA) seeking to recruit student commissioners (ages 16-22) for the California Department of Education Advisory Commission on Special Education (ACSE).
The ACSE provides recommendations and advice to the State Board of Education, the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, the Legislature, and the Governor in new and continuing areas of research, program development and evaluation in California Special Education.
Deadline for application submission is May 19th, 2025.

The NCYPC supports SB 612 by Senator Valladares. SB 612 would require that starting in the 2031-32 school year, students would have to take a stand alone Career Technical Education (CTE) course in order to graduate. Our Chair, Bode Gower, will be testifying in support of this bill when it is heard in committee on April 30th in Sacramento.

We are keeping the victims of the devastating fires in Los Angeles in our thoughts. As many of us in Northern California have dealt with similar fire-related tragedies previously, it is now time that we work to limit the damages of rampant wildfires in the future. Our coalition is dedicated to supporting wildfire mitigation legislation as well as helping to alleviate financial burdens that many wildfire victims experience.

As part of our new NorCal Speak Up Initiative aimed at promoting young people in Northern California highlighting the most important issues in their communities with their local policymakers. Our own Chief of Staff, Annabell Guinan, recently spoke at the Mendocino Unified School District board meeting proposing a resolution that would support the implementation of a composting program on local campuses, which passed unanimously.
