For many, March 29 is just another click on the calendar. For James and Amanda Thomas, it’s a harrowing reminder of a difficult day back in 2023, when — during a challenging training mission — two HH-60

On March 29th, Troop 3013 from
Hopkinsville completed a ten-mile hike in memory of the fallen Nine Eagles who perished in the tragic helicopter crash that occurred three years prior in Cadiz, KY on that same day.

The hike served a three-fold purpose.
To honor our fallen
To start the new Military Service and Veteran’s Merit Badge
To kick off the hiking MB for our scouts

At the start of the first nine miles of the hike, CW4 James Thomas, who served along these soldiers in Charlie Company, 6-101st GSAB-and still serves in this unit currently, held a minute of silence for each service member lost, and then told the Scouts about who they were as men and a woman who served their country as pilots, crew chiefs and medics in various stages of their careers and lives. He told of their accomplishments and goals to be the very best soldiers they could be as they served the DUSTOFF mission.

The hike started at Shaw Gym and weaved through Old Clarksville base where nuclear weapons were stored starting in the 1940s through 1965, and ended at the Nine Eagles Memorial.

The culmination of the hike at the Nine Eagles Memorial enabled the Scouts to connect faces to the names of the nine who lost their lives that night whom they had been learning about along the hike. It also allowed them to see a beautiful example of how a military memorial is built to continue to honor our fallen for decades to come.

Along the hike several requirements of both the hiking and the MS&V merit badges were discussed and completed.

Troop 3013 was honored to take part in this hike on the 3rd anniversary of the crash. It was a unique opportunity to cross teach two merit badges while honoring our nation’s fallen.

Eight members of Troop 13 (and three adult leaders) went to Pfeffer Scout Reservation at LBL today and spent six hours on conversation service. They helped clear downed trees and limbs, made huge stacks of firewood after it was cut, and cleaned up campsites, to help prepare for summer camp.

Congratulations to Collin Staley, who just earned his Eagle this past Tuesday! 🦅 Troop 13 is so proud of you!
