The first Pride march took place in New York City on the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. In November 1969, members of the Eastern Regional Conference of Homophile Organizations (ERCHO) began organizing the event. The 13 homophile organizations in attendance voted to pass a resolution establishing a national annual demonstration, which became known as Christopher Street Liberation Day.

An estimated 3,000 to 5,000 people participated in the inaugural Pride march in New York City. Today, millions of people take part in Pride celebrations across the city. Since 1970, LGBTQ+ communities and their allies have continued to gather each June to celebrate Pride, advocate for equal rights, and honor the ongoing fight for equality and inclusion.

Sylvia Rivera was a veteran of the Stonewall Inn uprising in 1969. She was born in New York City in 1951 to a Puerto Rican Father and Venezuelan Mother.

Her childhood was difficult due to the early loss of her parents and being attacked at school on the playground for experimenting with clothing and makeup. This led to her getting suspended from school for a week.

Rivera ran away from home at 11 years old and met Marsha P. Johnson in 1963. Johnson served as a mother figure to her. Together, they were actively involved in the Stonewall Inn Uprising and started the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR).

Marsha P. Johnson was a prominent figure of the gay rights movement in the 1960s and 1970s in New York City. She advocated for homeless LGBTQ+ youth, those affected by H.I.V. and AIDS, and gay and transgender rights. Born on August 24, 1945, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, she grew up in a religious, working-class African American family.

Marsha and her friend Sylvia Rivera joined the resistance at The Stonewall Inn and together led a series of protests following the Stonewall raid. In 1970, Marsha and Sylvia founded STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries), "an organization dedicated to sheltering young transgender individuals who were shunned by their families."
