Minnesota Association of Songwriters

Minnesota Association of Songwriters Minnesota Association of Songwriters supports education and activities for members interested in the songwriting process.

MAS Reviews

At most monthly meetings, MAS members offer reviews of attendee songs for at least two hours. Each song is reviewed by attending members of the organization and a discussion takes place with regard to structure, lyrical & musical content and commerciality, among other items. Instrumentals are discussed with regard to instrument use and arrangement. Music is experienced in as many diff

erent ways as there are people in the world, so members are open about what they hear and offer constructive criticism, keeping in mind the goals of the songwriter. Each member determines his or her own goals and objectives, and may accept or reject any comment.

Editor’s Notes by Mary Kealy-Falk: Happy May Everyone! We made it through another Minnesota winter and the shovels and snow blowers are back in the garage. But now comes the season of rakes and stakes to get those lawns spiffed up and looking lush and green and summer garden gear to get those annuals planted for the upcoming warmer days.

We have members contributing to “Putting it Out There” and “Kudos and Congrats” and “Have a Listen” to let us know what they’re doing with their songwriting passions. President Paul Nye muses about how our songwriting changes in many ways as we get older. Doug Millaway also has another great article on applying ethics to songwriting.

So enjoy the season, the nice weather and be sure to enjoy taking a look at the May MAS Newsletter!

An excellent message from songwriter Andrea Stolpe:

"You create. AI imitates.

What sets you apart is how you respond to a moment: how you fuse melody, lyric, and chord into something only you could make. Imitation is part of the journey, but eventually you’ll hit that blurry, uncertain place. That’s where originality lives.

Keep going. Be brave and trust the process.

Let yourself take your music to a place that AI can’t."
