🚨 SHOW UP TONIGHT: PROTECT OUR WATER, FARMS & FOOD SYSTEM 🚨

Right in the backyard of our SAgE Farm property, a zoning ordinance has already been passed and tonight, Andover officials may allow even taller, more intensive data center development. Our SAgE farmers rely on consistent, reliable access to water to grow food for the community. That water comes from the same local sources this data center would draw from, sources that are not unlimited.

What that means here:
A farmer planning their season… unsure if there will be enough water in July.
Crops stressed during peak heat because irrigation is limited.
Rising costs just to keep fields productive.
And in the long term, farmers being forced to scale back.

Tonight, decisions are being made that could allow this project to grow even larger. This is a moment to stand with our farmers.

Foodshed Alliance works every day to ensure farmers have access to land, resources, and the support they need to feed our region. But that work relies on if the natural resources they depend on, especially water, are protected!

📍 Rally: 6:00–6:45 PM
Intersection in front of municipal building
(134 Newton Sparta Rd, Newton, NJ)

📍 Town Council Meeting: 7:00 PM

If you can attend, even briefly, it matters. Our region’s water shouldn’t be treated as an unlimited resource.

Join Paulins Kill Watershed Community for a guided hike through the Paulins Kill Wildlife Management Area exploring the unique Hyper-Humus wetlands!

This special landscape spans more than 2,400 acres of freshwater wetlands, forest, ponds, and marsh habitat fed by the Paulins Kill River and natural springs. Once mined for nutrient-rich peat used in soil products, the area is now an important wildlife habitat and a focus of ongoing restoration.

Today the site supports over 200 species of birds and a wide variety of wetland wildlife, making it one of the most ecologically significant areas in the Paulins Kill watershed.

What to expect:
🌿 Learn the history of the Hyper-Humus site
💧 The importance of protecting our watershed
🌱 Opportunities to learn about local ecology and conservation

📍 Meet: Warbasse Junction Parking Area

During our recent floodplain forestry event at Memory Park, volunteers were helping care for young trees planted along the river. As part of the process, we check on protective tree shelters making sure they’re still doing their job and removing them once the trees are strong enough to grow on their own.

One shelter looked ready to come off… but inside was a tiny white-footed deer mouse nesting inside the shelter! 🐭🌿

Moments like this remind us this restoration work doesn’t just support trees, it creates habitat for wildlife too. We carefully replaced the shelter to keep our unexpected guests safe until they are ready to move out.

Join us for the 2-Day Winter Salt Snapshot on March 4 & 5 and become a community scientist for the day!

Participants can drop in anytime between 10AM – 2PM on either day to help test local waterways, learn how winter runoff impacts our environment, and contribute to real environmental monitoring efforts. Road salt doesn’t just disappear when the snow melts… it flows into our streams, our soil, and our farms.

No experience needed — just your curiosity and care for our local waters 😄💧
