We are so excited to host students from Salve Regina University this week as a community partner to the SRU Compass Summer Learning Program 2026! Ten students will be spending five full days at the Sanctuary learning about animal welfare, species appropriate care, nutrition and enrichment, behavior principles and the development cooperative care skills. Students will be working in teams to design and complete a project that supports the animals! We can’t wait to share learning moments from the week as we go along. Stay tuned!

We're recruiting volunteer docents!

River Haven Sanctuary is home to 53 rescued farm animals — horses, donkeys, pigs, goats, geese, turkeys, and chickens. Each one of them came to us from a situation that wasn't working: a slaughter pipeline, a home that couldn't keep them or a neglect/cruelty case.

Every spring and summer, guests come from across the region to meet our residents and learn about animal welfare. We're looking to bring on a small team of volunteer docents to help carry the program.

If you have warm energy, an interest in animal welfare, and a couple of free mornings a month from May through September, we'd love to talk to you.

No experience with farm animals required; we provide training. This is a wonderful fit for retirees, animal welfare community members, and anyone looking for meaningful, outdoor volunteer work.

Many thanks to everyone who came out today for our New Volunteer Orientation! We enjoyed meeting folks who are interested in working with our resident animals and deeply appreciate the help of our current volunteer community members. It's an honor to spend time with thoughtful and caring people interested in helping animals!

We will be holding a second orientation in a few weeks for anyone was not able to attend today. Stay tuned!

Thinking about volunteering at River Haven Sanctuary? Come meet us — and the animals — in person.

We're hosting a Volunteer Orientation on Saturday, April 25th from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM at the sanctuary (213 Arcadia Rd., Hope Valley). It's a relaxed, no-pressure meet-and-greet — small groups, a walk around the property, and time spent with our pigs, donkeys, horses, and goats.

No commitment required. Just come see if it feels like your kind of place.

Here's what we know about people who show up here regularly: they sleep better. They feel it in their bodies in a good way — carrying buckets, spreading hay, moving through open space is real work, and it shows. They put their phones down. They stand in sunlight. They get nosed by a pig who has absolutely no boundaries and doesn't care what their week looked like.

We call it volunteering. Our volunteers call it the best part of their week.

Like all good Rhode Islanders, we’re familiar with the lore of the Blizzard of ‘78. Thank goodness we didn’t have a sanctuary to steward through that! Oh wait. Never mind… today’s blizzard has officially toppled the snowfall record of ‘78. We got about 24”, and Providence is expecting 36” when it’s all said and done. We’re happy to report everyone is doing well here at the sanctuary, and now we have our own stories to share about the Blizzard of ‘26.
