Does anyone you know meet our NEW ALA membership eligibility requirements??
At the 2026 American Legion National Convention, delegates adopted new, expanded eligibility rules for the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) that are effective immediately.
Expanded Eligibility Rules
Family Members: Membership eligibility now includes grandparents, parents, siblings, spouses, and direct or adopted descendants of eligible veterans and American Legion members. [1, 2]
Gender-Neutral Inclusion: The updated language opens membership up in a gender-neutral manner, meaning grandfathers, fathers, brothers, and sons of eligible veterans or Legion members can now join. [1]
Veterans in Their Own Right: Women and men who are eligible for membership in The American Legion on their own service record can also join the ALA. [1, 2]
Dual Membership: Members are now permitted to hold dual membership in both the Sons of The American Legion (SAL) and the American Legion Auxiliary without a conflict of interest. [1]
How to Join or Renew
Application: You can review requirements and download forms directly through the American Legion Auxiliary Joining Page.
Documentation: New applicants must submit a completed membership application along with proof of the qualifying veteran's eligibility.
Dues: Annual dues are paid locally through your specific ALA unit.
