Has there ever been an opportunity for a Republican Vice President candidate to address the IAFF at convention? Don’t hold me to it, but I believe this is a first. While both candidates were given equal time to address the 57th Convention of the IAFF and each were met with encouraging applause and taunts. Does an endorsement from the IAFF carry much weight for a candidate and their party? Yes it does.

I believe my counterpart Local 117 President Steven Cook, has recently written it best;

The oath we all took on the floor of the union hall states in part, "...you will endeavor to subordinate every selfish impulse to the task of elevating the material, intellectual, and moral condition of the laboring class." Part of that responsibility is staying in the conversation, wherever that takes us, at all levels of government, and using our power to influence decisions that benefit all of us as firefighters.

This post is not a pass for an endorsement of one candidate over another. This is a challenge to us all to educate, influence and work with our representatives on issues that directly affect our local, our neighbors and our state.

Please pray for peace and comfort for our brother Justin King and his family.

With profound shock and deep sorrow, we must share the sudden and tragic news of the untimely passing of our friend, brother, and colleague, Justin King. Yesterday, we discovered that Justin tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident.

Justin and his brother, Austin, were not just members of our firefighter family, they were born into it. Growing up around Center Point Fire, they followed in the footsteps of their father, Jonathan King (JK), who retired in 2015, and became an integral part of our community at an early age.

During this difficult time, we ask that you keep Justin's family in your thoughts and prayers. Your support and comfort will be greatly appreciated.

Our hearts are heavy today as we lost long time Hoover Fire Fighters Association member Donna Lacey. Ms. Lacey served as the Administrative Assistant for the Hoover Fire Department many years. She always took care of us and did so many unsung things behind the scene to keep our jobs stress free. We love you Ms. Donna and you are truly missed.

Can’t say enough to thank Ryan D. Vidischak, All-Pro Fire and Water and Justin McKenzie aka Chief Grill Daddy and the Hose Draggers for preparing another fine meal for Hoover Fire Fighters Association Local 4035 and our retirees. Congrats to our Local 4035 members and newest Alabama Smoke Divers.

Meet Hoover Fire Department’s newly certified Alabama Smoke Divers, Hunter Johnson, McKinley Bass, Jake Smith and Martin Daugherty. Smoke diver training is a 40 hour very intensive and physically demanding hands-on training course to sharpen skills of the current firefighters. This course was conducted at the Alabama Fire College and completed today. Thank you for your hard work and dedication to our profession! We are very proud of you!
