Today’s is all about our CHAMPS 💙

Community Heroes: Advocate. Motivate. Persevere. Serve.

This group continues to represent what Down Syndrome Alabama is all about: advocacy, connection, community, and showing up for one another.

Our self-advocates continually give their time, energy, and heart to this community. Whether they’re volunteering at fundraisers like Wing Ding, being a part of DSA events, connecting at social outings together, succeeding at school / in the workplace, or representing DSA in communities across Alabama, they consistently remind others what inclusion, friendship, advocacy, service, and community truly look like.

What makes CHAMPS so special is not just the places they attend or volunteer at, but the way they encourage one another, build confidence, create meaningful friendships, and proudly represent the DSA community everywhere they go. They are advocates simply by being themselves, sharing their gifts, connecting with others, and helping people better see, know, and love our community.

We are incredibly proud of our CHAMPS for continually showing up, supporting one another, and helping create a more connected and inclusive Alabama. Thank you for representing DSA so well and for reminding us all of the power of community!

Looking for a meaningful book to add to your family's summer reading list?

Written by author, advocate, and mom Becky Carey, 47 Strings tells a story of friendship, acceptance, and the beauty of seeing people for who they are. Inspired by her daughter Tessa, who has Down syndrome, the book helps children understand that our differences are not something to fear, but something that makes our communities stronger. This book became a way to challenge outdated stereotypes about Down syndrome and help families, educators, and children embrace inclusion from an early age.

At Down Syndrome Alabama, we believe representation matters. When children see individuals with Down syndrome as classmates, friends, leaders, and valued members of their communities, it helps create a world where everyone belongs!

📣 BIG NEWS, ALABAMA EDUCATORS!

For the first time ever, the National Down Syndrome Congress is bringing its nationally recognized Educators Conference to Alabama! After years of planning and collaboration, Alabama was selected to host this one-day professional learning experience designed to give educators access to leading experts, practical strategies, and innovative ideas that support students with Down syndrome, autism, and other intellectual and developmental disabilities. We're so proud to partner with NDSC to bring this renowned educational event to our state!

HomeGrown is a 6-month, research-based online program designed to help families build healthy eating and movement habits at home. Participants receive practical tools, videos, expert support, HomeGrown merchandise, and monetary compensation for their time.

A big step forward! The DeOndra Dixon NIH INCLUDE Project Act has unanimously advanced out of committee and is one step closer to becoming law.

We're proud that our organization and one of our self-advocates traveled to DC to advocate for this legislation during meetings with Alabama's U.S. Senators Katie Britt and Senator Tommy Tuberville earlier this year.
