Food rescue starts with a simple question: “How can we make room?”

During our visit to Crisis Center Inc., we connected with Leena and rescued food for community distribution.

Leena immediately made space in her office refrigerator, rearranging supplies to keep the rescued food safe until the food could travel to a FeedBHM location.

One decision protected a food donation from a trip to the landfill and moved nutritious food to families who need options to feed their children.

Strong community partnerships turn available resources into tangible impact.

35 gallons of water. Pan meals for families. One powerhouse woman we like to call Mississippi Mags. 🙌

Maggie took on two important and unexpected missions one day at FeedBHM.

👑 She earned the title **Queen of Pan Meals** while preparing meals for our community.

💧 She also sterilized containers and bottled **35 gallons of water** for emergency relief efforts when neighbors did not have access to clean water.

Her work strengthened two areas of community response: nutritious meals for families and emergency supplies for people facing crisis.

One garden. Hundreds of possibilities. 🍅🥒

A huge thank you to Jim Redwine and St. Mark United Methodist Church for sharing fresh produce from their community gardens with FeedBHM.

Cucumbers and zucchini are thriving in their harvest, along with tomatoes and other fresh produce.

Every donation moves nutritious food from local gardens into community kitchens and family food boxes.

Community gardens can strengthen local food access while turning a harvest into nourishment for neighbors.

Harper traded a day at the water park for a day of service. 💙 For real!!

She returned to FeedBHM Bessemer with one goal: serve.

Harper spent her day in the kitchen preparing meals for families across our community.

Young volunteers like Harper are modeling compassion, responsibility, and leadership to our entire community. One day of serving can begin a lifetime of giving.

Thank you, Harper, for choosing to love your neighbors and showing everyone what leadership looks like, no matter your age. 💙

How far can one food box really stretch? Ashley took the food box challenge. 👀

Intern Ashley started with one Liberty drive thru food box and a question: how many meals could she create from the ingredients?

The final count:

🍽️ 8 servings of chicken and potato hash with corn salsa and crescent rolls
🥧 6 servings of shepherd’s chicken pie
🍊 16 orange sweet rolls
🥔 Potato peel crisps
🥖 Homemade croutons

30 servings from one food box, plus creative uses for food scraps.

Ashley’s challenge demonstrates the power of resourcefulness. A single box can provide more meals, reduce waste, and stretch household groceries further.

FeedBHM equips families with nutritious food and practical ways to maximize every ingredient. Take the challenge! Come for a food box Monday thru Thursday from 1-4pm at 2732 Old Rocky Ridge Rd 35216. Then, let us know what you created and what you learned with the food box challenge. Remember to take pictures and journal recipes and ideas along the way and we may be able to use your content for an upcoming blogpost on our website featuring your creativity and courage!
