Klamath River Local Organizing Committee We can move many mountains together, through a collective organizing process. Our First Issue: Comprehensive Community Burn Plan

The Klamath River Local Organizing Committee (KLOC) was officially established at a public meeting on April 15, 2012 at
the Libby Nix Community Center in Weitchpec CA. Over 35 community members attended to prioritize the concerns surfaced through our listening campaign which started in early August 2011 as the first step in a proven successful model of community organizing named People Improving C

ommunities through Organizing (PICO), one of the largest grass roots organizations in the nation. We (the KLOC) represent over 75 local families (Indian and non-Indian) devoted to building healthy, sustainable, and culturally rich communities throughout the Yurok reservation.

Dear Skip (and team)-
On behalf of The California Endowment and as the Program Manager for the Del Norte and Adjacent Tribal Land’s Building Healthy Communities (BHC) Initiative site, I want to sincerely thank the community residents of the Yurok reservation for their perseverance and dedication to build a healthy community through the community organizing process.
As you are aware, the ultimate goal of the BHC is to develop resident leaders who know how to change public policies and systems to create healthier, and more equitable communities. When I attended the June 8, 2012 Community Action meeting in Weitchpec, I saw this dream in action! I was extremely impressed by the resident leaders’ disciplined approach to researching the problem, their ability to navigate the Tribal government system and to develop transformational relationships with Tribal elected leaders.
It is my understanding that the Yurok Tribe has allocated significant resources to support the planning and implementation of an initial controlled burn in Weithpec. I’m pleased to invest $3,000 – through a Building Healthy Community grant to the Yurok Tribe - to support the Tribe’s partnership with the Klamath River Local Organizing Committee, and to specifically cover the costs of some additional expenses to make this initial burn a success.
Please share this message with the leaders of the Klamath River Local Organizing Committee.

We are getting closer! We are planning on cutting the fire line in this coming Saturday Feb 9, 2013. All able bodied volunteers are welcome! Show up at 10:00 at the Weitchpec Transfer Station gate. Since we are community driven we have NO FUNDING for tools for our volunteers so if you can bring picks, rakes, hoes, McLeods or Pulaski axes that would be awesome. Green machines with blades would also be helpful to do a little brushing. There is lot of large scotchbroom along the south end of this parcel so a few saws running to knock that big stuff down would be a blessing too. Fire line boundaries are marked on the roadway and tagged into the brush with tape. Anyone wanting to brush during the week is more than welcome.

This is our burn area outlined in yellow, 139 acres. The boxed yellow areas are allotments and may not be burned, pending allotment holder approval which we may not have by burn time. The burn area has had TWO previous controlled burns, one in 1999 and one in 2004 so it is not a virgin area and will be a good first burn for the KLOC!

In the United States and many other parts of the world, fires are behaving differently now than they have throughout history, largely as a result of human actions. An estimated 80% of U.S. forests and rangelands have altered fire dynamics. The U.S. Fire Learning Network (USFLN) is engaging dozens of...
