ah, glory days! This ole’64 Mack C86 pumper has certainly enjoyed a long career starting with being commissioned for 20 years service to North Haledon, NJ Volunteer Fire Department. Then at auction, it was bought and driven south of the Mason/Dixon to her new home for the next 20 years, North Dade, GA Volunteer Fire Department (also known as NDFD and North Dade Fire/Rescue). Both organizations have pages that can be found easily.
By 2006 the pumper was rented out to a nearby small community on Elder Mountain across the Tennessee line. They returned it to us (I am a volunteer firefighter at NDFD) and it was decided to sell it. Members hoped to keep it in the family, but there was no room in our small fire hall as we had just received delivery of a new pumper. In 2008 I agreed to purchase the unit for a donation to the department but unfortunately it was not long before it became apparent its lack of regular use, and possibly maintenance while in private service had taken its toll on the nearly 50 year old Mack Thermodyne 707 6 cylinder engine. It had a miss, burned oil and has trouble accelerating up any grades. I have been unable to find someone who can definitively tell me what is wrong or how much it will cost to repair. It sat for several years at a local Chattanooga business but they never were able to make the contacts needed to find parts and do what they think needs to be done. I had it returned to Dade County where it was stored briefly in Trenton, then closer to home at the S&L Auto Body Shop, and finally to my property in Wildwood in the older area known as Ho**er, Georgia.
There she sits, fading in the weather though I still have hopes to get the engine running again, repainted, and a barn built to house it. I have renamed the engine in honor of Union General ‘Fighting’ Joe Ho**er who led the Battle of Lookout Mountain in the Civil War running off the Confederates who had laid seige to the city of Chattanooga. His trusty steed was also named ‘Lookout’ and so when repainted, I will brand the old Mack “Lookout” above the windshield. Meanwhile with help from my cousin I designed and had printed a new logo for the Ho**er Hose Company. Within a maltese cross design originally used as the North Haledon VFD logo, is a drawing of General Ho**er on Lookout Mountain with the US flag waving looking across Moccassin Bend towards the city. Above the scene lettering spells out “North Haledon, NJ”, the number 2 is superimposed over the center drawing, and below the scene lettering spells out “North Dade, GA”, commemoratiing the rig’s travel from NJ to GA.
I am ACTIVELY seeking a mechanic who wants to tackle this repair. As well as an automotive electrician who wants to help upgrade the original lighting with a combination of modern strobes and portable audio/visual components for use at schools, parades and other special events. This might involve switching over the old electrical buss system from its positive ground configuration to a modern negative ground. And, ideally, one or more sponsors willing to donate funds for the restoration and improvements. The cost over all could be upwards of $20,000 but for the right local business, with an agreement to use the vintage fire truck for a limited number of promotional appearance or in print media (Firehouse Subs? Dade County Historical Society ? Tennessee Fire Equipment &Supplies?)
