Before kicking off project season, Bernadette and Javan are monitoring a past project site: Neal Creek Phase 1. Habitat monitoring is essential in river restoration work to see what progress is being made, and provides information on the types of restoration that can best achieve project goals, in this case, feasible aquatic habitat.

In the video, Bernadette is performing a stream pebble count survey, which is a hydrology/geomorphology field technique to measure size distribution of substrate on a riverbed or stream.

By selecting and measuring 100+ stones at random, it can help classify and evaluate water flow.

Swipe thru to see Bernadette using a rangefinder, another monitoring tool used for measuring habitat unit (e.g. pool) length- and Javan, holding a staff gauge to measure water depth.

Thank you to our volunteers who mulched more plants at the Lower East Fork Phase 2 site! Mulching these plants helps keep the weeds at bay while retaining soil moisture for these hot summer months- with the overall goal of having these plants provide shade and biodiversity for our streams.

Bernadette and Javan were out on Eliot Branch installing temperature loggers that will monitor the stream temperature all summer long. These temperature loggers take the temperature of the water once every hour.

Why do we do this? We collect water temperature data to help us better understand stream conditions for native fish species.

Swipe to see Bernadette, Javan, and Riffle 🐾 along Eliot Branch.

Please join us Tuesday, March 31st at Working Hands Fermentation (1021 12th St, Hood River) for a talk with ODFW Fish Biologist, Lindsay Powell.

Doors will open at 5:30, for those who would like to grab a beverage and socialize, and the presentation will run from 6:00-7:00.

Lindsay will talk about Hood River salmon and steelhead populations, including results from last summer on juvenile steelhead in the East Fork Hood River, the number of juvenile Hood River steelhead migrating to the ocean, and numbers of spring Chinook adults in the West Fork Hood River. This information will help evaluate long-term effects of habitat restoration and water conservation in the watershed.
