We have some great working partners in Montana and none better than the folks at Trout Unlimited. We are working hard with TU, Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks, Clark Fork Coalition and others to protect more fish.

In Washington, Oregon and Idaho, where people are trying to save Pacific salmon runs, ditches have to have screens. So those states have programs, money and staff to install and maintain fish screens. But salmon runs don’t reach into Montana.

It's exciting to see FCA and Energy Trust's work featured in Oregon Business Magazine! Our work together modernizing irrigation systems in Oregon and across the West has the capacity to support agriculture, local communities, our shared environment and to produce new renewable energy projects.

A critical benefit that irrigation modernization creates for rural communities is pressurized water to aid in fire suppression. The tragic fire last summer in Talent and Medford, OR destroyed over 2,700 buildings and displaced more than 3,000 people, further emphasizing the need to develop every possible fire-fighting tool. Irrigation districts in the Rogue River Valley are developing modernization plans that could provide vital, rapid access to pressurized water in remote rural settings.

Second-generation farmer Kevin Richards discusses the challenges of substandard rural internet on his Fox Hollow Ranch in Madras, OR. Modern technology allows for vast improvements in water-use efficiency, but the new tools often rely on solid broadband. In addition, the Richards' kids are currently schooling from home due to Covid restrictions, so internet connection is even more vital.

FCA is exploring ways to co-locate fiber optic with irrigation piping to dramatically improve rural broadband throughout Oregon and the West.

Energy Trust of Oregon has supported FCA's Irrigation Modernization Program since 2015, leveraging over $150 million in state and federal investment to support modernization projects across 14 Oregon counties. Modernizing irrigation districts through piping and in-conduit hydropower conserves water for fish and agriculture and generates money for farmers and irrigation districts to spend in their local economies. See how the impact of those early investments continues to be the catalyst for turning visions into reality.

Our story

FCA began in 2005 when the Farmers Irrigation District of Hood River, Oregon, licensed the Farmers Screen™ technology to FCA under the condition that we take the Farmers Screen™ to market, address institutional barriers to fish screens, and invest profits into other technologies and solutions that benefit both the environment and agriculture.

Along the way, we realized that the highest measure of mutual benefit would be to achieve agricultural resiliency. Achieving such a goal meant taking on the complete modernization of our failing irrigation infrastructure.

FCA is in the unique position to help realize that formidable goal. We have amassed trusted relationships through our hands-on, solutions-oriented approach with farmers and rural communities. Those relationships have built a deep understanding of the challenges and benefits associated with the process of irrigation modernization.

Our Irrigation Modernization Program creates a path forward for irrigation districts to upgrade their infrastructure, saving water and operating costs, while restoring streams, protecting fish, and generating green, renewable energy.
