Hilo Coast UCC

Hilo Coast UCC Missionary Shiro Sokabe arrived from Japan in 1894 and founded Honomu Christian Church to serve the Japanese immigrant plantation workers in Honomu.

Today we're proud of our diverse ethnic and multi-cultural congregation. Our original church was founded by missonary Shiro Sokabe who arrived from Japan in 1894 to serve the Japanese immigrant plantation workers in Honomu. Decades later, we have grown into a diverse ethnic and multi-cultural congregation. For more info, call (808) 963-6330 or visit our website at www.hilocoastucc.org for directions to our church.

On Sunday, March 22nd, we will be celebrating Rev. Shiro Sokabe, the founding minister of Honomū Congregational Church (now Hilo Coast UCC). This year our theme is “For such a time as this,” honoring the time of Rev. Sokabe’s arrival and the impact he made on the Japanese community living on the sugar plantation. Please bring any memorabilia, clothing items, books, or other items representing this historical time to put on display for others to view. In addition, we will be having a special guest and presentation during the worship service. And as part of the celebration, the Women's Fellowship will be serving lunch afterwards. Please join us on this very special occasion!

Soup-er Bowl Sunday: Inspired by the Bible story of Jesus feeding 5,000 with just five loaves of bread and two fish, the our church keiki's goal was to fill three large baskets with food. They filled four! The collection of 148 food items and $52 for the Food Basket became their charitable act for Purim. The Women's Fellowship also chipped in $500. Mahalo to all for your contributions!
