What’s playing in your Walkman aboard the USS Missouri? 🎧

Straight from a USS Missouri Sailor’s collection, Bruce Cromell’s cassettes from his time onboard give us a glimpse into what Sailors were listening to as they unwound and passed the time at sea.

From Pearl Harbor to Peace 🕊️

In exactly one week, we will gather to remember one of the most historic days aboard the USS Missouri: the Formal Surrender Ceremony marking the end of World War II.

On December 7, 1941, the attack on Pearl Harbor brought the United States into World War II. On September 2, 1945, nearly four years later, Allied representatives and the Japanese delegation gathered aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay to sign the Instrument of Surrender, formally ending World War II.

We are privileged to welcome several guest speakers for this year’s commemoration. Swipe through to learn more about them.

Join us as we remember and honor this historic day and reflect on the enduring hope for lasting peace.

🗓️ September 2, 2026
🕘 Ceremony begins at 9:02 AM. Please be seated by 8:45 AM.

What was playing aboard the Mighty Mo in the late ’80s and early ’90s? 📼🎶

This month’s featured artifact gives us a pretty good idea. These cassettes belonged to USS Missouri crew member Bruce Cromell, who served aboard from 1988–1992.

What are you playing first? 👇

For one night, this group didn’t just learn about life aboard a battleship — they experienced it. ⚓

This past April, 56 cadets and leaders from Thomas Johnson High School Patriot NJROTC in Frederick, Maryland, spent a night aboard the Battleship Missouri, trading a typical classroom for a night of hands-on history.

Through our Overnight Encampment program, the group got a taste of life at sea — exploring the decks, learning the Mighty Mo’s history, building teamwork skills, and sleeping in the crew berthing areas.

Mahalo, , for coming aboard!

Ready to rewind to the days of mixtapes and Walkmans? 📼

This cassette tape case was donated to us by Bruce Cromell, who served on the USS Missouri as an Interior Communications Electrician (IC3) in E-Division from 1988-1992. It is a double-sided case containing 60 cassettes with his name stenciled onto the top.

This artifact gives us an idea of how crew members passed the time — and a snapshot of popular music during the Missouri’s modern era.

Tonight’s the night! 🌅

Our 2026 Sunset Yoga on the Pier Series wraps up THIS EVENING at 6 PM, and you won’t want to miss this final chance to flow with us on the forward pier.

For three summers, we’ve gathered as a community to move and unwind against the beautiful backdrop of the Battleship Missouri and Pearl Harbor. It’s a chance to connect, reflect, and honor history together.

We’re grateful to offer this experience at no cost, thanks to the generosity of supporters like you. If you’ve enjoyed these evenings and are able, a donation of any size helps us keep this tradition — and the Mighty Mo’s legacy — alive for years to come.

See you on the pier!
