It’s not every day you witness a meeting of giants: the USS Missouri and a mighty aircraft carrier sharing the same dock after the war.

In May 1946, the Missouri was tied up at Norfolk Naval Base, Virginia, with an unidentified aircraft carrier — possibly HMS Ruler (A-731) — off her starboard side. The carrier’s faded hull number hints at her British Pacific service, while what looks like an attack transport sits off Missouri’s stern. Even in port, the Mighty Mo knew how to make an entrance!

On October 21, 1950, the Mighty Mo made her presence known off the coast of Chong Jin, Korea — just forty miles from the Soviet border.

With all hands at General Quarters, USS Missouri unleashed her firepower, bombarding enemy positions. As the only U.S. battleship on active duty when the Korean War began in June 1950, Missouri was quickly deployed to Korean waters, becoming the first American battleship to support United Nations forces during the conflict.

Welcome back, Rene Mathis!

Mr. Mathis served aboard USS Missouri from 1985 to 1991 in S-3 Division and is a recommissioning plankowner.

During his time on the Mighty Mo, he served in a variety of roles, including barber, ship's store clerk, tailor, launderer, Master-at-Arms, and Supply Department administrative office staff member. The Supply Department helped bring a sense of home to life at sea by providing essential services and everyday necessities that supported crew morale and readiness.

During a visit to the ship in May, Rene shared many memories from his years of helping keep things running smoothly aboard Missouri. Thank you for your service, Mr. Mathis!

This May, we had the distinct honor of welcoming Mr. Beano Roberts back aboard the Mighty Mo to celebrate his 97th birthday — a true homecoming for a remarkable veteran.

As a Corpsman from 1951 to 1952, Mr. Roberts served with dedication and heart, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire all who walk these decks. We are deeply proud to know him and grateful for his service.

Happy Commissioning Day! ⚓

On June 11, 1944, USS Missouri was officially commissioned into service at the New York Navy Yard, beginning a legacy that would span World War II, the Cold War, and beyond.

As we commemorate this anniversary, we’re sharing a snapshot of some of Missouri’s original plankowners. Swipe to see some of the ship’s Cooks and Bakers from S Division, whose efforts helped keep the Mighty Mo running during her earliest days at sea.

From preparing meals for a crew of thousands to supporting daily life aboard ship, every Sailor played a role in bringing America’s Last Battleship to life.

Join us in honoring the plankowners who helped launch one of the most remarkable chapters in naval history.
