Kēia in Hawaiian means this, right here, in immediate proximity. Through this meaning, the vision of this dance movement is to acknowledge the importance of people celebrating dance and shared space. We are inspired by Hawai'i: the land, the people, its past, and possible futures. Our movement consists of structured improvisation, which incorporates and celebrates the individual dancers' voices. A
t the heart of Kēia Dance Movement is also a movement in terms of redefining what community means. A fluid arts collective of like-minded but diversified talent, we are inspired by the creative explosion happening in Honolulu and seek to honor new frontiers in collaboration, foster expansive interaction, and spark social change through art. We seek to bring dance to a new platform of community involvement by creating immersive events that bring dance out of the auditorium and into the audience. Our first production in 2014, Sea Streets Sky, reflected our urban environment and its relationship with natural elements of Hawaii. Our second production in 2015, Past Boiling Over, presented stories based upon Hawaii's past, our pasts, and how this moves us into the future. The choreography evolved over time, structured by the music and organically transforming with each practice (sometimes via dancing streetstyle in Kaka'ako waterfront park, sometimes on hilltops at sunset). In creating this collective journey we took into account not only the creation of the islands and humanity's impact on the earth, but also drew inspiration from each dancer's individual paths: their childhood, life stories, and what has brought them to THIS point in their life.
