SuperChill Saturdays in Pia Valley just keep getting better 🌿✨

Today was all about building connection, creating space for each other, and getting our hands dirty for the ʻāina. Time flew by because we were having THAT much fun 🤙🏽

We planted nearly 80 pili grass along with another 80 native plants, and welcomed our newest little crew member, puppy Pill, for their very first valley day 🐶💚

Grateful for every hand, every laugh, every moment. Community is restoration.

We’re highlighting the coastal nehe this week! Nehe is endemic to Hawaiʻi, meaning it naturally exists only in Hawaiʻi and nowhere else in the world! Nehe is a prostrate perennial herb that mainly grows on sandy or rocky coasts and some dry lowlands.

Nehe is an important plant used in coastal restoration! Prostrate plants that grow as ground covers are essential for reducing erosion and accumulating sand on dunes. Coastal habitats are one of the most threatened ecosystems in Hawaiʻi due to development, disturbance from recreation, and invasive species. Restoring the native vegetation on our coasts will help to restore populations of native bees and ground-nesting seabirds.

This species of nehe was previously classified in the genera, Lipochaeta and Melanthera. Other native species in the Melanthera and Lipochaeta genera are also named nehe.

Mahalo for suggesting that we highlight the coastal nehe! Comment your favorite native plant that you want us to highlight next!

We unfortunately do not have nehe at our forest restoration site in Pia Valley. To learn more about the native plants we do have, and our efforts to restore this watershed, join us at any one of our volunteer days in Pia: every Monday, and every 2nd & 4th Saturday!

We had so much fun at Group Therapy today! Mahalo nui to Noelle Campbell from for coming to talk about the loko iʻa in Maunalua!

We learned about the history and current stewardship of Kānewai and Kalauhaʻihaʻi. does incredible work to restore these loko iʻa, educate keiki about how these food systems sustained communities, and so much more. We also learned about Kuapā fishpond, or Keahupuaomaunalua, which was once the largest loko iʻa on Oʻahu but is now known as Koko Marina.

We then worked on clearing a new kīpuka and w**ding guinea grass around older kīpukas. Mahalo to all of our volunteers for being of service today and planting over 150 native trees, shrubs, and grasses!

Happy Earth Day! 🌎🌱🩵

We’re highlighting our native plant garden in Kuli’ou’ou today! We partnered with the Board of Water Supply, Mālama Maunalua, and Go Native to install this garden last year.

We hope it will give people some ideas about what native species they can plant in their garden! Native plants are naturally adapted the local climate and these typically require less water.

Using native plants in your landscaping is a great way to save water, reduce stormwater run off, and have a positive impact on downstream ecosystems!
