In September, the Fellows reunited in Japan for their final in-person convening. Following their visit in Okinawa meeting with researchers, scientists, entrepreneurs and officials from the Okinawa Prefectural Government office, they continued in Tokyo with visits to the Ministry of the Environment and NHK Broadcasting corporation to gain insights on implementing energy policy and communications strategies during severe weather events. The group also toured the world’s largest underground flood control facility, the Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel, and met with a local non-profit organization focused on community-based approaches for rainwater management in the Sumida Ward of Tokyo. Finally, most of the cohort joined an optional fieldtrip to the 2025 Expo in Osaka to close out the highly eventful week of engagement.

The Japan program was off to an eventful start in Okinawa!

At the University of the Ryukyus, the group toured the COI-NEXT aquaculture research facility, “RYUDAI GROUPER Project,” where grouper is being farmed, with hopes to develop techniques that can be replicated in areas with no ocean access.

On their day trip to Kumejima, representatives from the Kumejima Town Council welcomed the group to their offices for a discussion about the island and their efforts at resilient economic development using the Kumejima Model, which promotes the development of industry by combining the uses of deep seawater. While on the island, they visited the Okinawa Prefecture Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) Demonstration Test Facility, which sits at the heart of the island’s efforts to utilize deep sea water to both generate renewable energy and serve as an incubator for private sector business development.

Back in Naha, the fellows met with the Okinawa Prefectural Government officials from the Peace and Subnational Diplomacy Division, the SDG Promotion Office, and the Environmental Restoration Division.

Stay tuned for a full recap of the program, including the remainder of the week in Tokyo and the Expo 2025 in Osaka.

As the 2024–2025 Indo-Pacific Futures Fellowship wrapped its first year in Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand, fellows reunited in person to explore how communities can build systems that sustain both people and planet.

The week was grounded in powerful experiences—beginning with warm welcomes into Indigenous Māori spaces and local marae, where we connected with the deep meaning of place, ceremony, and community. Site visits to the Capital Kiwi Project, Zealandia’s groundbreaking ecosystem restoration, Victoria University’s “Living Building,” Wellington City Mission, and thought-provoking panel discussions challenged us to reimagine leadership, belonging, and intergenerational resilience. These moments were further enriched by hands-on workshops that offered space for reflection, peer learning, and actionable insight.

With support from Alec Wagner of the University of Hawaiʻi, Mānoa's Office of Indigenous Knowledge and Innovation (OIKI), we close out this fellowship year with immense gratitude to the people and places of Wellington for sharing their wisdom, hospitality, and heart.
