Gary S. Matsuki & Spark M. Matsunaga Peacebuilding Award

The Gary S. Matsuki & Spark M. Matsunaga Peacebuilding Award is presented by the Conflict Resolution Alliance (CRA), a member-supported 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing peacebuilding, conflict transformation, and collaborative communities throughout Hawaiʻi. Through education, dialogue, mentorship, and professional development, CRA supports and develops the next generation of peacebuilders committed to creating positive change in their schools, workplaces, and communities.

Purpose of the Award:

The Gary S. Matsuki & Spark M. Matsunaga Peacebuilding Award recognizes graduating high school seniors who have demonstrated a commitment to peacebuilding, dialogue, leadership, community engagement, and fostering understanding across differences. The award supports students who are committed to building more peaceful, just, and collaborative communities through higher education and public service.

Priority consideration will be given to applicants who intend to pursue studies in Peace and Conflict Studies through the Matsunaga Institute for Peace at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.

Award Components

Recipients will receive:

A $500–$750 scholarship

A Certificate of Recognition

Recognition at “CRA’s Annual Meeting”, held virtually in November

A four-year membership in CRA

Participation in the “CRA’s Mentorship Program”

Access to “CRA Tuesday's Learning Hour” professional development series

Conflict Resolution Alliance Tuesday's Learning Hour

These sessions are informal learning events focused on building skills around conflict management, communication, and collaboration.

"Active Listening with Empathy"
with Robert Lillis and Yumi Saito

About Session: This session invites participants to explore how active listening with empathy shapes everyday experiences of conflict resolution and peace. Drawing on mediation practice and research, it examines the shift from control to connection and introduces practical listening strategies that foster trust, emotional regulation, and mutual respect. Participants will reflect on everyday communication practices and develop listening skills that support constructive dialogue and peace as a daily, relational practice.

About Talk:

Mediation has been a growing field, art, and practice since its ambitious beginning in the early 70’s. And despite disagreements along the way among mediation practitioners, the legal profession, and others, regarding which approach is right, mediation has come a long way. From Court Programs, University Programs, Government Programs, and a continually growing cadre of private practitioners, mediation has evolved and made an impact on communities, courts, businesses, government, education and more. Tracey’s presentation will reflect on the positive advancements mediation has made locally and nationally, and the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead.

Conflict Resolution Alliance (CRA) member Lisa Jacobs enjoys cycling with friends and family as a self-care activity when not mediating or collaborative lawyering. Lisa recently flew with her Brompton folding bike from O’ahu to her hometown of Los Gatos, California, to picnic with her daughter Jessica at Vasona Park in Los Gatos. Their picnic lunch is inside the gray bag on the front of Lisa’s bike. Jessica works as a software engineer for Netflix, which is located just a couple miles away from where Lisa was raised.

This virtual event is free for all current CRA members.

Since these are two documents relating to the business portion of the 2023 Annual Meeting agenda, also attached are (1) the slate of proposed nominees for the 2024 CRA Officers and Directors, and (2) proposed Minutes from the 2022 CRA Annual Meeting, which was held virtually on November 18, 2022.

Have a wonderful Conflict Resolution Day!

Thank you for all that you each do to build community through your acts of kindness, service to the community, passion to build bridges, and create open dialogue. Thank you dear friends!

Conflict Resolution Day was conceived to:
- Promote awareness of mediation, arbitration, conciliation and other creative, peaceful means of resolving conflict;
- Promote the use of conflict resolution in schools, families, businesses, communities, governments and the legal system;
- Recognize the significant contributions of (peaceful) conflict resolvers;
- Obtain national synergy by having celebrations happen across the country and around the world on the same day.

October has become a time to promote and celebrate peaceful conflict resolution practices worldwide. Dedicated dispute resolution practitioners are helping to educate the public about mediation and other innovative conflict management processes. Many Appropriate Dispute Resolution organizations, are working to raise awareness of the importance of mediation and conflict resolution.
