Hawaiʻi Green Growth’s June Aloha+ Spotlight is the Aloha+ Goal of Local Food Production & Consumption!

The Local Food Production & Consumption Aloha+ Goal aims to at least double local food production, with 20–30% of food consumed in Hawaiʻi grown locally. Progress is tracked through five key indicators on the Aloha+ Dashboard, visit alohachallenge.hawaii.gov to learn more. Throughout the month, weʻll be spotlighting various efforts across the state that are getting us closer to our goal.

Our Aloha+ Workday host for this month is . Join HGG and Paepae o Heʻeia for a hands-on loko iʻa workday at Heʻeia Fishpond, an ancient Hawaiian fishpond in Koʻolaupoko, Oʻahu.

Paepae o Heʻeia’s work to restore and care for this loko iʻa kuapā uplifts traditional Hawaiian aquaculture, strengthens local food systems, and perpetuates place-based education rooted in cultural sustainability. Through fishpond restoration, Paepae o Heʻeia helps nourish communities physically, intellectually, and spiritually while reconnecting communities to resources on the ʻāina and the kai.

Come mālama Heʻeia Fishpond and support local food production and fishpond ecosystem restoration!

Mahalo nui to for hosting our May Aloha+ Workday at the Kakaʻako Ocean Friendly Garden!

Our community came together to mālama this urban food forest by clearing storm drains, moving green waste, and pulling weeds — helping reduce stormwater runoff, support watershed health, and protect our ocean.

The Kakaʻako Ocean Friendly Garden shows how green spaces in urban Honolulu can serve as practical, place-based solutions for healthier communities and coastlines. Home to edible plants including ʻulu, maiʻa, lilikoʻi, and more, the garden advances the Aloha+ Goal of Smart Sustainable Communities by minimizing land use impacts and strengthening stewardship of public and green spaces.

We’re grateful for Surfrider Oʻahu’s leadership across Ocean Friendly Gardens, Ocean Friendly Restaurants, beach cleanups, water quality monitoring, and policy advocacy for clean water, coastal preservation, beach access, ocean protection, and solutions to plastic pollution. Support Surfrider’s important work at oahu.surfrider.org . Or, grab a OFG Gimlet as part of their collaboration with , which donates a portion of the proceeds to Surfrider Oʻahu!

Missed this workday, but want to get involved? Aloha+ Workdays are a monthly, statewide series connecting community members to hands-on action across the Aloha+ Goals (and the counties!). Hawaiʻi Green Growth’s May Aloha+ Spotlight is !
This month, we’re proud to spotlight Surfrider Foundation Oʻahu and their Ocean Friendly Garden in Kakaʻako — a hands-on example of how community stewardship can help protect our ocean from the impacts of urban runoff.
Stormwater runoff is the #1 source of ocean pollution in urban areas. Surfrider’s Ocean Friendly Garden offers a place-based solution by using conservation, permeability, and retention to restore urban green space, support healthier watersheds, and reduce pollution before it reaches the ocean.
Through this work, Surfrider Oʻahu is helping advance the Aloha+ Goal of Smart Sustainable Communities, particularly:
Target 05 | Land Use Impacts — Minimize the negative impacts of land use on the natural environment and communities.
Target 06 | Open, Public, & Green Spaces — Strengthen stewardship and use of Hawaiʻi’s public, open, and green spaces.
Join Surfrider and HGG for the Ocean Friendly Garden Workday to mālama ʻāina and advance progress on these goals via your direct action!
Date: Sunday, May 17
Time: 9:00–11:00 AM
Location: 210 Coral St., Kakaʻako

After the workday, join us for an informal pau hana at Surfrider’s Ocean Friendly Restaurant partner, , and try their limited-edition OFG Gimlet! A portion of proceeds from the cocktail will support the Oʻahu Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, with ingredients sourced directly from the Ocean Friendly Garden in Kakaʻako.

Mahalo to the Koʻolau Mountains Watershed Partnership for hosting our inaugural Aloha+ Workday! KMWP is leading critical work to protect and restore Oʻahu’s watershed forests, advancing the Aloha+ Goal of Natural Resource Management, including Target 03: Watershed Forest Area.

Our community came together to spend Earth Day in action at the Ala Mahamoe site, to remove invasive guinea grass and Chinese violet, making space to replant native species like ʻulei and naupaka 🌱

This work is more important than ever — recent Kona low storms have accelerated the growth of fire-prone invasive species. By restoring native ecosystems, KMWP is strengthening watershed health and increasing wildfire resilience across our islands.

Five years. Six goals. One ambitious agenda. Today, Hawaiʻi Green Growth is proud to release our 2026–2030 Strategic Plan for Collective Action (and we’ve already started).

This Plan marks a decisive shift for HGG: from convening and measuring to coordinating and delivering. The Aloha+ Challenge has guided us since 2014, but vision is not achievement—and with 2030 approaching, it is time to close the gap between commitment and results.

We recognize that Earth Day is not just a single day of reflection, but a reminder of the responsibility we carry every day to care for one another and the places that sustain us. While today offers a moment to pause and remember the deeper why behind this work, this Strategic Plan is meant to guide what comes next.

We will also be hosting a Town Hall on Wednesday, April 29 to share this Strategic Plan publicly via virtual webinar next week. Join us on Zoom from 9:30-10:30am on Wednesday, April 29—we’ll share the Plan in greater detail and what this means for next steps, Network engagement, and closing Goal gaps.
