Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunset Founded in 1995 The Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunset became Hawaii's first evening club.

It is the mission of the Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunset to cultivate friendships, exchange ideas and develop programs to create positive change in our world. The Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunset meets at the Waikiki Yacht Club on Thursday evenings 6:00-7:30. We have service projects on going in Romainia, Malawi and Nepal as well as locally. The Hawaiian Humane Society (Ewa campus) needed a generator as a back up when power was out during storms like “Lala.” The Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunset donated a check to cover the cost of a generator. The tour, looking at ithe adoption of dogs and cats in their cages, was heartwarming.

Aloha Honolulu Sunset Rotarians,

What an incredible way to wrap up our 2025–2026 Rotary year at this weekend’s District 5000 Conference!

I want to extend my sincere gratitude to our Service Chairs, Board members, committee leaders, and every member of our club for your hard work, dedication, and commitment throughout the year. Your collective efforts resulted in the Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunset being named Club of the Year (Large Club)!

In addition, our club received an extraordinary number of District awards in the Large Club category:

Membership Award
We were also honored to receive the District Governor Citation, Rotary International Excellence Award, and PolioPlus Society recognition.

These awards span nearly every aspect of Rotary—from community and international service to our Foundation, vocational service, membership, and public image. They speak volumes about the strength and breadth of our club. More importantly, these accomplishments demonstrate the tremendous support, leadership, and spirit of service that each of you exemplifies.

Several of our members also received special recognition during the conference. Arjun Aryal was recognized with the Rotary International Service Above Self Award, and Kazu Inakoshi and current President Mike Kass were inducted into the E Ola Mau Society. Congratulations to each of them on these well-deserved honors!

Dr. Lorenzo Albala, a non-Rotarian, was also recognized for his humanitarian work. Members of our club nominated him for this award, and we will hold a recognition ceremony for him.

Lastly, Sharon Erhorn and Rich Zegar were recognized this morning during a special session honoring Rotarians who passed away during the past year.

I would also like to extend a special mahalo to PDG Nancy Cabral, AG David Livingston, and the entire District 5000 leadership and staff for their support of our club and for everything they do for Rotary throughout Hawaiʻi.

As I finish my term, I can say without hesitation that it has been a true honor and privilege to serve as President of this club. The President may have the title, but this year reinforced for me that it truly takes a village to make a great Rotary club. These awards belong to all of you.

Thank you again for allowing me the privilege of serving as your President, and congratulations to everyone on an exceptional year. Club of the Year is something we should all be very proud of!

Mahalo for your service, friendship, and dedication to Rotary. I hope we can all continue to give our full support to President Mike and his Board.

John A Burns School of Medicine H.O.M.E. Medical Van fundraiser last night raised funds for a great cause. Medical students performed hula, music and a 1st year student did magic. 250 guests enjoyed Chai’s delicious cuisine, fellowship, entertainment, silent auction at the BENUE.
The van provides medical care staffed by medical students and physicians at homeless shelters. Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunset retrofitted the van 20 years ago and again after it was vandalized and a new van was purchased so H.O.M.E. van can continue doing its work in the community. Our Rotary Club continues to support this van every year. This is how Rotarians Create Lasting Impact!

A Special Evening at Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunset!

Last Thursday, we had the pleasure of welcoming visiting Rotarian Gerhardt from Austria to our meeting. After retirement, one of the items on his bucket list was to travel and enjoy time in places he had never visited—and we were delighted that Honolulu was one of them!

What a wonderful surprise when Christel (originally from Germany) welcomed Gerhardt with a beautiful plumeria and a warm German greeting. Jim had a chance to practice his German too!

The Waikīkī Yacht Club chef prepared a delicious Hawaiian dinner featuring chicken long rice, laulau, mixed vegetables, and haupia coconut dessert. A true taste of Hawaiʻi!

Our speaker, Sunset Rotarian Jue Jue, shared highlights from the mental health seminar she recently facilitated in Thailand. Her presentation was both meaningful and inspiring.

More celebrations-
We bid aloha to Johan Akash, a former member, who is going away to Texas for his residency in pediatrics. Mark (retired surgeon) and Skip ( retired pediatrician) were delighted to share tips.

Kudos to Kazu for receiving “Excellence in Service” award from his employer, Alohilani Resort.

It was a great evening filled with friendship, fellowship, delicious food, and learning!

We celebrated a future member of our ohana with a baby sprinkle. SAA Ota, and his wife are expecting their #2 baby so our social for the month was to surprise Dana with gifts for the family.
All enjoyed the backyard setting with the pool and cool breeze at our President Mike’s “hale.” Thank you for the hospitality.
The fellowship, variety of food and to top it off, hand-made sushi by Kazu, made this social memorable.

We had a fantastic meeting this past Thursday, July 23rd, at the Waikiki Yacht Club!

Our guest speaker was Gianna Consalvo, Service and Engagement Specialist at Rotary International, who delivered a fascinating presentation on Rotary Fellowships.

Record-Breaking Fundraiser Success!

We raised over $100K at our recent annual fundraiser at the Halekulani Hotel! This is an all-time high for our club and will ensure we can continue our vital local and global work in the year ahead. The Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunset welcomed our 2026 President, Mike, on July 9th—our first meeting of the new Rotary year!

We gathered for the final meeting of our Rotary year to celebrate the many members who went above and beyond in support of our club’s operations and success.
Our Unsung Hero Award was presented to Jim, our dedicated Treasurer, in recognition of the invaluable behind-the-scenes work he does to keep our club’s finances in excellent order. Beyond managing the books, Jim also cleaned and restored our club’s historic banners and proudly attached the newly earned award patches.
The Spirit Award honored three of our newest members who eagerly stepped into Board leadership roles and helped advance the club’s initiatives. Dr. Mark Izawa, a retired surgeon and the only award recipient present that evening, was recognized for his service as our Director of Vocational Services.

In addition, two outstanding Rotarians, Dr. Skip Suzuki and Itsuko, each received a crystal for their generous donations as major donors. Gone but not forgotten, Rich Zegar was recognized with an RI award for his generosity and support of the RI Foundation.

Before the evening came to a close, Jonathan presented a wooden surfboard table top made by him to thank Dan, on behalf of the RCHS, for his leadership. In return, the board members received a gift from Dan that Jonathan made- a wooden phone stand with a charger.

President Dan closed the evening by expressing heartfelt thanks to all members for their dedication and commitment throughout the year. Together, our club completed 19 local community service projects and supported 4 global grants, making a meaningful difference in our community and around the world.

Congratulations to all of our award recipients, and thank you to every member for exemplifying Rotary’s motto of Service Above Self. Here’s to another year of making a difference!
