Hawai‘i Meals on Wheels (HMoW) helps kūpuna and individuals with disabilities preserve their independence at home by providing nutritious meals, connection and community. Hawaiʻi Meals on Wheels was founded in 1979 to provide a hot home-delivered meal service for frail elderly and disabled persons who were unable to cook or shop for themselves and did not have access to help for these essential fu

nctions. We are a private, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, founded by former State of Hawaiʻi librarian Irmgard Hörmann and the Social Ministries Committee of the Lutheran Church of Honolulu. She spearheaded the formation of a committee representing different denominations and several Honolulu churches to provide a basic nutritional and human support system for their isolated, disabled, and frail elderly neighbors. Clement, Unitarian Church of Honolulu, First Christian Church, First Presbyterian Church and First United Methodist Church. The service began with two small routes in Makiki and Moʻiliʻili, six clients, six volunteers and $25. In 2016, Hawaiʻi Meals on Wheels served more than 97,000 meals with about 450 volunteers. In 2023, HMoW served over 180,000 meals, delivering more than 700 meals per day. Hawaiʻi Meals on Wheels continues to grow in response to an increasing need for hot, nutritious, home-delivered meals, human connection, and wellness checks.

Over 100 routes. One mission. And this month, we could really use your help.
Every weekday, Hawaiʻi Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver nutritious meals and caring connections to kūpuna across Oʻahu. With a record breaking number of routes, it takes many helping hands to make sure every kūpuna receives their meal.
We especially need volunteer drivers the week of August 17–21, when several members of our staff will be attending the Meals on Wheels America Annual Conference in Las Vegas.

Whether you can deliver for one day, several days, or become a regular volunteer, your time makes a meaningful difference.

Help us keep every route moving and every kūpuna connected.

Please contact our Volunteer Team at [email protected] or (808) 988-6747 to get started!

HMoW’s own, Evelyn, Nikki and Jasha were thrilled to attend the 2026 Native Hawaiian Convention at the Blaisdell this past week. It was an impressive event of speakers, performances, and break out sessions all delivered with aloha and lōkahi. 💙🌈

For Chelcy and David, volunteering with Hawaiʻi Meals on Wheels is more than delivering meals. It’s a way to pass on their values of compassion, service, and aloha to the next generation.

Alongside two of their children, Paul and Porsche-Che, they visit client Henry, sharing not only a nutritious meal, but also friendship, connection, and the reassurance that someone cares.

Every delivery nourishes more than the body—it reminds our kūpuna they are valued, remembered, and never alone.

Join our volunteer ʻohana and help deliver meals, connection, and aloha across Oʻahu.
