ESSA Hawaii

ESSA Hawaii Ethnic Studies Student Association at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa

The Ethnic Studies Student Association (ESSA) is a non-profit organization based at the University of Hawai‘i, Manoa Campus. Our central goal is to create an open dialogue about culture, identity, and sociopolitical issues that are explored in Ethnic Studies (ES) courses and life. ES takes a critical stance against racism, sexism, homophobia, classism, and the systematic marginalization of people o

f color. To accomplish our goals and to better connect with students and the community, we have chosen a variety of artists across all disciplines to function as our mouthpiece. In the past year, ESSA has hosted concerts featuring the politically conscious artists Rocky Rivera, Geo from Blue Scholars, Bambu, Kiwi, and many more. These concerts also feature local musicians and other multidisciplinary artists whose artwork and methods of expression center on identity formation, culture, and socio-political issues. We wish to provide a safe and supportive atmosphere where artists can showcase their own talent, find their own voice, and inspire others in the process.

Saturday, November 19 2022 : The Night We Rose Up To Eat The Moon 🐉🌗

On this night, a hundred different migration stories were woven together. Our energy was boundless. Our love and passion were over flowing.

These were moments of revolution.

We want to share a deep mahalo to each individual who supported ESSA with our fundraiser ❣️❣️ the laughs, smiles, connections, and freedom to be WE make it all worth it 💯

None of this could have been possible without the kindness and care of . It was an honor to host such impactful artists. Mahalo especially to for being down to jump on set the day before 😝! And to for the energy you bring 💥! Mahalo for sharing your resources at the concert. Mahalo NUI PIHA to for these stunning shots 📸

Importantly, MAHALO NUI to our ESSA ‘ohana who were there to plan for months, set up, run it, and clean up. You know who you are. We will never forget this experience 🖤

Story time ⬇️

At the film showing, we asked what creature was bringing into the space and she told us of the bakunawa. The “bent serpent” that rose from the ocean and ate seven moons, until there was one left. The story of this ancestor is shaped by the interactions between place, time, and the people of the land.

We lived our bakunawa stories that night. We claimed that time and space and defined it our own way. Stories of trauma and vulnerability, of holding and letting go, of hurt and comfort, of once in a lifetime chances and moments that changed everything. We will tell the stories of this night how we want to. This is us making history, our way ✊

Kaiser, we’re holding you accountable.

You have over worked our clinicians, our friends and family who struggle to provide care in a failing system. You have denied us access to adequate mental health care. Kaiser, you have sacrificed our health for your profit.

ESSA joins in to support mental health care workers on the front lines of their strike. Since May, Hawaii staff and patients at Kaiser have been on strike to protest the poor working conditions in the Mental Health department at . This line joins supports a national effort led by to unionize staff and negotiate with Kaiser to meet worker and patient demands.

Add your voice to the fight! Repost and share this information in your circles. We will show that we matter!

We had too much fun this weekend!!

On Friday, ESSA students were given a seat at the table as ES faculty, staff, founders, and community partners met to envision the future of the department. We had the opportunity to meet with ES alumni and other department faculty to discuss current challenges and needs and share solutions that nurture strong relationships.

Mahalo nui for hosting us in a Kanaka Maoli space of collaboration. We shared the day with many great minds, both seen and unseen!

Happening this Wednesday!
Automating Banishment: Data-Driven Policing, Gentrification Criminalizing Houselessness
April 6, 3pm-5pm HST

Format: Virtual

Join us for a virtual workshop on data-driven policing, houselessness, and real estate development with the Stop LAPD Spying Coalition rooted in the Skid Row community. Coalition members will workshop the findings and organizing strategies published in the coalition’s new report, “Automating Banishment: The Surveillance and Policing of Looted Land.” We bring this conversation to Hawai’i to exchange knowledge and experience about gentrification and policing that increasingly depends on data generation and data sharing to predict crime. The Coalition has successfully held LAPD accountable and has dismantled LAPD’s first-generation predictive policing programs.

Skid Row is located on stolen Tongva/Gabrielino land. Honolulu is located on Kanaka Maoli land illegally occupied by the United States.
