Today we honor World Hospice and Palliative Care Day. 🕊️

In 1978, Sister Maureen Keleher answered a call to care for people in their most tender moments, and St. Francis became the first hospice in Hawai'i. Her compassion, courage, and belief that no one should face the end of life alone laid the foundation for everything we do.

More than four decades later, her legacy lives on in every hand held, every family comforted, and every moment made more peaceful. We are honored to carry that mission forward for our kupuna, our families, and our community.

Mahalo to Sister Maureen, and to everyone who has been part of this story of caring since 1978.

Last week, we shared photos from our St. Francis Feast Day Mass and Luncheon. This week, we’re delighted to share a video produced by our Mission Department, featuring heartfelt messages from two of our Sisters.

Their words remind us of the legacy of compassion, gratitude, and love that continues to guide St. Francis Healthcare System and the care we provide to Hawaiʻi’s families.

As we honor St. Francis and celebrate our organization’s Heritage Month, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to our Sisters and every member of our ʻohana who carries this mission forward each day.

As we celebrate the 800th Anniversary Jubilee of St. Francis of Assisi, we’re honoring his love for animals by featuring the beloved pets of our St. Francis ʻohana.

Our pets bring joy, comfort, and a chance to recharge as we care for kūpuna and families across Hawaiʻi.

First up: Meet Winston!
Winston is our Access Manager Julie’s best friend. Winston understands Spanish fluently. His artistic portraits have been used to raise funds for The Beagle Freedom Project. He is completely unimpressed by fireworks or thunder. He is still obsessing over the Cheerio that rolled under the fridge two years ago.

Today, we celebrated the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi and the Franciscan spirit that continues to guide our ministry.

We were blessed to welcome our Sisters of St. Francis to our chapel for a special Mass, gathering together in prayer, reflection and gratitude. Following Mass, we continued the celebration by sharing bento lunches with our St. Francis ʻohana across campus.

As we honor St. Francis, we are reminded of his call to serve with humility, compassion and love—and of the legacy our Sisters have built and continue to inspire in all that we do.

Mahalo nui loa to Aloha United Way for bringing the Harvard Club of Hawai'i to our campus for the AUW 2026 Day of Caring!

Our wonderful volunteers spent the day spreading aloha and creating heartfelt gifts for our patients. They designed adorable t-shirts for our new Francis’ Friends teddy bear program, which will be presented to our Adult Day Care and Hospice patients. They also created beautiful yarn lei that will be gifted to our hospice patients.

We are so grateful for the time, creativity, and compassion our volunteers shared with our community. Your kindness will bring comfort, smiles, and a little extra aloha to those we serve.
